Man tried committing suicide with car bomb www.privateofficer.com
Mohave County Sheriff’s officials say 55-year-old James Lyle Pierson, from Washington state, was booked Wednesday on suspicion of disorderly conduct involving a dangerous instrument.
Authorities say Pierson rigged his four-door sedan with propane bottles, gasoline and shotgun shells in an attempt to make the car explode during a crash. But it didn’t go off when he drove off a steep embankment Tuesday night.
Pierson survived, then walked eight miles to Oatman, where he called authorities. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated and later released. Police bomb technicians later rendered the vehicle safe.

The Yuma Police Department placed Officer George Presco on administrative leave after a detective discovered Presco didn’t return evidence – including cash – that he checked out from a case in late February, said Officer Clint Norred, a police spokesman. Some evidence was recovered after police interviewed Presco, but “a large sum” of money was not. A detective said over $11,000 was taken.
Presco was booked into jail on count of felony theft. He will remain on administrative leave while the department investigates further, Norred said.
Presco has worked for the department for nearly two years.
He is being held on a $55,000 bond.

Peoria police Officer Mike Gauchat, 41, and police services Officer Donna Cullum, 45, died when the two-seat homebuilt Safari helicopter they were in crashed west of Interstate 17 just south of Black Canyon City.
“This is a major tragedy for the families involved and for members of the department,” said Police Chief Larry Ratcliff. “Both Mike and Donna are highly respected members of the department.”
The helicopter burst into flames after it hit the ground, law enforcement officials said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Donna and Mike’s families and the members of our department who are processing this tragic event while continuing to provide law enforcement services to the community,” Ratcliff said.
A memorial service for the pair is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Christ Church of the Valley, 7007 W. Happy Valley Road.
Internment will be at Sunland Cemetery in Sun City.
Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef said Gauchat was a traffic officer who enjoyed flying helicopters and was at the controls when his aircraft went down. Cullum was his girlfriend.

Student killed in teacher love triangle www.privateofficer.com
Chandler police said 20-year-old Sixto Balbuena told them he never meant to kill Samuel Valdivia. He allegedly told police “the blade went in like going into butter” and that he just wanted to show Valdivia how much he hurt him by sleeping with Tamara Hofmann
Balbuena, a Navy sailor on leave from California, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after police found him covered in blood and told them about the killing. He remained jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on Tuesday and did not yet have a lawyer.
Balbuena found his girlfriend naked and Valdivia in his boxer shorts in the woman’s bedroom around 2:40 a.m. Friday, according to police reports and court documents.
Balbuena told police that Valdivia apologized to him before Balbuena began kicking, punching and throwing things at him, according to a police probable cause statement.
Police said Balbuena told them he “wanted to teach the victim a lesson,” and stabbed him in the lower side with a kitchen knife, according to the court document. Valdivia later died at a hospital.
He also threw Hofmann to the floor jumped on top of her and demanded to know how long she had been cheating on him, according to the document.
Police said Hofmann taught Valdivia math at El Dorado High School in Chandler and was also Balbuena’s teacher when he attended Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe.
A call to both schools was not immediately returned Tuesday. Hofmann’s phone number is unlisted.
Balbuena is the one who called 911. He told officers he felt remorse for stabbing Valdivia after seeing him lying on the floor struggling to breathe, police said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Favazzo said Hofmann is being investigated for potential misconduct relative to her involvement with Valdivia.
A 2006 Chandler police report obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday shows that police suspected Hofmann of having a sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old Balbuena.
Both Hofmann and Balbuena denied being in a sexual relationship, and police closed the case.

Arizona teacher arrested for having sex with minor http://www.privateofficer.com
Emili Kay Daniels, a teacher at the American Heritage Academy, was arrested after the school’s principal called the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office to report the relationship.
The principal told officers that he’d gone to Daniel’s classroom to speak to her, but the door was locked.
When he unlocked the door, he saw Daniels and the student, whose pants were undone, exposing his underwear.
Both Daniels and the student initially denied they had a sexual relationship.
The student admitted the next day that he’d had a relationship with Daniels beginning in October 2008, and that they’d had three sexually-related encounters beginning in November.
Authorities are reviewing text messages and e-mails between the two.
Daniels was arrested Thursday and charged with three counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Bradley Jay Gerrard, 28, left his home around 11 p.m. to buy an air mattress for a visiting family member. Gerrard was apparently attacked on his way home from Wal-Mart, police reported.
A passer-by found his body just after midnight Sunday in a median along Tartesso Boulevard near Bruner Road. Officers found Gerrard’s partially burned vehicle several miles away.
Buckeye police are processing both scenes for evidence, interim Cmdr. Phil Harris said Monday. Police have no potential suspects.
Gerrard had been a corrections officer for four years. He was assigned to the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis, near Buckeye.
Police have not found any evidence linking Gerrard’s slaying to his work with DOC.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Buckeye Police Department at 623-349-6400.
