Authorities with the Union County Sheriff’s Office now say that they have made an arrest in the theft of close to $150,000 from the Fairview Fire Department.
William “Bill” Hinson, 51, is accused of writing a series of checks on the fire department’s checking account and then cashing them for his own personal use over a five year span. Hinson served as the treasurer for the Fairview Fire Department for a number of years and had control of the department’s finances according to an investigator with the UCSO
The fire chief said that vendors began complaining that invoices and bills were not being paid and when he looked into things did not look right. That’s when he called in the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey expressed disappointment in the crimes. “The men and women of our fire departments work very hard for our personal safety in Union County. For a person to betray a position of public trust in this manner is unfortunate. We should remember these were the actions of an individual, and do not reflect on the character and reputation of a fire department that has faithfully served the members of the Fairview community for many years.”
There was no word on whether or not investigators recovered any of the money that was stolen.
Hinson was booked into the county jail and was later released on bond.
