MANCHESTER NH Sept 1 2008– Three burglars broke into the former Jac-Pac Food Sales Co. on Thursday and began stripping it of its telephone wire and copper when police caught them, court records show.
Two city men and a 16-year-old male were hiding beneath a conveyor belt on the catwalk above the 163 Hancock St. building’s floor when police took them into custody at gunpoint about 3:30 p.m., an affidavit alleges.
A security guard called police to the former meat packing building, which is closed and unoccupied, after he noticed a door had been tampered with and saw one man inside tearing down walls, police allege in an affidavit.
Most of the walls and ceiling were ripped down by time police arrived, the security guard said. Police found a large barrel filled with telephone wire and copper, the affidavit said.
Ricky Brodeur, 34, and Kevin Caswell, 17, both of Manchester, were arraigned in Manchester District Court yesterday on one count each of felony burglary and possession of burglary tools, a misdemeanor. No pleas could be entered on the felony. A preliminary hearing will be Sept. 15.
Both Brodeur, of 537 Lake Ave., and Caswell, of 217 Spruce St., pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor. Trial is set for Dec. 9.
Brodeur has “made a career of burglary” and has several prior convictions for burglary and grand theft in Florida dating back to 1992, said police prosecutor officer Stephen Reardon. The court ordered Brodeur held on $10,000 bail. Caswell will be held without bail pending a bail revocation hearing Tuesday.
The 16-year-old juvenile will be petitioned to appear in juvenile court at a later date.
