A state police unit is missing almost a dozen of it’s troopers after authorities fired them for cheating on a recent test. State officials say that a dozen State Highway Patrol troopers, including 11 from the Canton post, have been fired for cheating on a certification test for drunken-driving detection devices.
Lt. Eric Sheppard, commander of the Canton post said his post lost three sergeants and eight troopers from his staff of 32. He said the post is attempting to rearrange shifts to make up the difference but has had to seek help from Medina and Stark County posts.
Troopers were fired for using cheat sheets or knowing about the cheat sheets and not alerting officials.
Troopers and other police officers must be certified annually before they can administer tests that measure alcohol on drunken driving suspects.
The troopers’ test involves 50 multiple choice questions. Canton city prosecutors said up to 70 drunken driving cases could be affected.
In making the announcement, officials did not say how the manpower for the Canton post would be restaffed or the names of the troopers involved.
