Officers responded to the West Edgar Road store about 3:10 p.m. for a report of a shoplifter fighting with security, police said. Security officials there reported watching Elianna Duncan, 23, of Staten Island stuff $115 worth of clothing into her handbag and try to leave the store without paying.
When she was detained by the exit, she began to fight with a guard and soon bit his hand, scratched his face, kicked his legs and spit at him, Detective Lt. James Sarnicki said. She was arrested and charged with robbery.
Duncan told police she was two and a half months pregnant, but refused to go to the hospital for examination, Sarnicki said.
She was taken to the Union County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail, pending a June 9 court appearance.
The victim suffered cuts from the scratching, but refused medical attention, Sarnicki said.
