“I don’t know what motivates people like this,” said Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson. “It’s a stupid way to try to get out of a traffic ticket.”
Perry Carter, 50, was charged Saturday in Ferndale 43rd District Court with impersonating a police officer, a one-year misdemeanor. He was released after posting a $100 bond with a pre-trial hearing date pending.
Police said Perry was driving over the speed limit in a 2006 Ford 500 when he was stopped about 11:15 p.m. on Woodward near Silman
He said he was a police officer and pulled out this badge,” Wilson said. “Our officer asked him for his accompanying police ID card, which the suspect was unable to produce.”
The Ferndale officer then asked the suspect for the phone number to the police station he worked for in Pennsylvania and the suspect gave him an invalid number, authorities said.
“Mr. Carter finally admitted he was not a police officer but worked as a security guard in the projects,” Wilson said. “We arrested him and confiscated the badge.”
Friday marked the second time in three months a traffic violator presented Ferndale police with bogus law enforcement credentials.
A Clinton Township man, Rabih El Habhab, was arrested June 26 when he falsely told police he was a federal drug agent and gave them bogus DEA credentials. He was convicted of impersonating an officer in Ferndale District Court and subsequently put on probation. He also pleaded guilty to improper use of emergency lights on his pickup truck and driving on a suspended license.
“What’s more disconcerting when these people have a badge to impersonate an officer is what they might be using it for out among the general public,” Wilson said. “There are cases in robberies and certain sex crimes where suspects put themselves in a position over their victims by posing as a police officer.”
A man in a pickup truck July 13 identified himself as a police officer to a Hazel Park woman at a pay phone near Eight Mile and John R.
Police said the man ordered the woman into the vehicle and tried to rape her behind a business near Eight Mile Road in Ferndale. The woman managed to fight the man off, got out of the truck and sought help from a Ferndale neighbor who called police.
