GREENSBORO, N.C.Feb 11 2009 — An arrest has been made in the Dec. 15 shooting death and robbery of a Brinks security guard outside the Friendly Center Old Navy store, Greensboro police announced Tuesday
Police said Isaam Mattaay Chaplin, 27, had been arrested and charged in the killing of Juan Estevan Salado, 25, of Charlotte.
Police said Chaplin stole several bags, then drove away in a dark vehicle that was parked at the nearby Wachovia Bank bank branch.
Police at North Carolina A & T University contacted Greensboro police at about 4:30 p.m. Monday after Chaplin was involved in an altercation at the campus. After running a warrant check, Chaplin’s name was found to be wanted by Greensboro police for driving with a revoked license.
He was being held without bond after being charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Police said Chaplin was not an A&T student and that they did not know why he was at the campus. WXII12 News has learned that Chaplin was a former student who was taking a semester off. He was originally from Philadelphia, where according to a Classmates.com listing, he attended Martin L. King High School. He was majoring in criminal justice and had no prior criminal record.
Police said he had previously been an employee at the Old Navy store on Bridford Parkway.
Greensboro police Chief Tim Bellamy added that he was relieved to have Chaplin, who police said acted alone, off the street.
Jail officials said he was in court for his first appearance Tuesday afternoon and had not yet retained an attorney.
Police announced in January a $2,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest. Brinks Inc. also offered an additional $25,000.
Greensboro Capt. Janice Rogers said hundreds of calls had been phoned in to Crimestoppers.
Police said that they had been following up on numerous leads and that Chaplin had been developed as a suspect.
The shooting happened on a weekday during the heavy holiday shopping season.
Several stores near the Old Navy were closed while police conducted their investigation.
Police released grainy surveillance image taken inside the store that they said showed Chaplin wearing a shoulder-length, dark red wig and teal surgical scrubs. Police said he was most likely trying to conceal his identity.
