FRANKLIN COUNTY, IN Feb 18 2011 – The 4-year-old son of a Franklin County, Indiana Sheriff’s Deputy has died after he was accidentally shot in the stomach by a gun he and his twin brother found in the basement of their home.
Aiden Mehlbauer died Wednesday evening at about 6:30 p.m. at Children’s Hospital after being shot in the stomach earlier in the afternoon.
The Batesville Police Department received a 911 call just after 4 p.m. that a shooting had occurred at 20140 Stacy Road.
Aiden’s mother told police that Aiden his twin brother, Mason, were in the basement while the mother helped their 6-year-old sister with her homework.
In the basement of the home there is an “office” area currently under construction in which the boys’ father, Greg Mehlbauer, a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy, has stored his uniforms and other law enforcement equipment.
In that area, the twins located a loaded 40-caliber Glock semi automatic handgun. The boys were handling the gun when it discharged.
Greg Mehlbauer was not home at the time of the shooting.
The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy, and advised it could be 8 to 12 weeks before the full report is available.
