HENDERSON, Nev. May 1 2012 (AP) — A boy died Saturday, hours after being attacked by his family’s dog while celebrating his first birthday in Henderson.
Police say the boy, Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan, was on the floor with his grandmother in the living room of her house late Friday when he crawled over to the dog and started petting him.
The dog, a 6-year-old Mastiff/Rhodesian ridgeback mix weighing about 120 pounds, latched his jaws around the boy’s head and began shaking him back and forth.
The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he died early Saturday.
The boy turned 1 year old on Thursday.
Police say the dog is being declared vicious and will be euthanized.
The family told police they had owned the dog since he was a puppy and he had never been aggressive toward people.
