Man kidnapped, robbed at Atlanta Home Depot www.privateofficer.com
Source:WSBTV.com — Police are searching for two gunmen who abducted a 71-year-old man from the parking lot of a Home Depot in southwest Atlanta.
It happened at the Home Depot at 1032 Research Center Drive on Saturday morning.
James Smith told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young that the ordeal all began when the men asked for a shopping cart.
“Guy says, ‘I’ll take that if you’re finished with it,’” said Smith.
Smith said then two black men with handguns forced him into his car in the parking lot of the Home Depot.
The gunmen forced Smith to drive to the Bank of America at Cascade Road and Donnelly Avenue and withdraw $2,000.
Smith told police that the gunmen then ordered him to drive to another Bank of America, where he was forced him to withdraw $2,500 from a teller.
The thieves also stole Smith’s watch and a class ring.
“He blindfolded me, put a gag in my mouth and tied my hands. I said, ‘please don’t hurt me … I got a wife and five kids and 10 grandkids and two great-grand kids. Please don’t hurt me”
They eventually released Smith on Cascade Road.
Smith told police that the gunmen escaped in a blue/gray Dodge Stratus.

www.privateofficer.com – Three cashiers at a local Home Depot were arrested along with a customer for participating in a scam that involved the theft of about $10,000 in merchandise, police said today.
This was the second time in a year that Mount Pleasant police have busted up a sales scam, with help from store security, at the Home Depot at 1 Saw Mill River Road, Police Chief Louis Alagno said.
The cashiers – Laura Richardson, 23, Aneka Tonge, 31, and Evelyn Darkowaa, 25, of the Bronx – were arrested Friday and are due in Village Court Thursday. Richardson and Tonge were charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony, while Darkowaa was charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor. The customer, Manuel Arevato, 34, of Ossining, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony. He is also due in court Thursday.
Arevato, a self-employed contractor, had a special arrangement with the cashiers to pay for items such as shelving, chainsaws and power tools, in cash at a reduced cost or received them free, the chief said. The arrangment allegedly continued for about a month. Some of the merchandise has been recovered.
Store security tipped off police about the scam. The investigation is continuing.
“We believe other customers were involved but have not yet been identified,” Alagno said.

Loss prevention agents at the store took Noah Goldman into custody for shoplifting at the Jantzen Beach Home Depot and was processing him when they called police to transport the man to jail.
It turned out that Goldman was also wanted for a bank robbery at the Bank of American on SE Chkalov Drive in Vancouver earlier this month.
After the initial robbery, Vancouver Police Detectives had tentatively identified the suspect and had a vehicle description.
The vehicle described as the suspect vehicle in the Vancouver robbery was found by Porrtland officers in the parking lot of the Home Depot when Goldman was arrested.

Home Depot closes stores, 1300 employees affected www.privateofficer.com
Home Depot closes stores, 1300 employees out of a job http://www.privateofficer.com
So far, 2008 hasn’t been a banner year for Home Depot.
In January, the Atlanta-based home improvement retailer laid off 500 people from corporate headquarters
In February, it announced its first ever year over year sales decline.
In April, it announced the net loss of 970 jobs from reorganizing its human resources staff.
And today, it announced it is closing 15 stores, affecting 1,300 employees. Plus, the Home Depot is suspending the development of 50 stores. The 15 targeted stores are mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, from New Jersey to North Dakota. No Atlanta stores are scheduled to close.
“Closing a store is always a difficult decision because it affects both our people and our
communities,” Home Depot CEO Frank Blake said in a statement. “But, as with our decision to slow future store growth, this is the right decision and will bring long-term benefits to our associates and to our shareholders. … By building fewer stores, in the best locations, and making sure our existing stores are profitable, our company will be in a much stronger competitive position.”
The home improvement chain has blamed the slowdown in the housing market and the sluggish economy for its retail woes.
Home Depot will record a $586 million pre-tax charge related to the store closings and the 50 shelved stores. That includes $8 million for severance and $11 million for inventory markdowns. Home Depot hasn’t revised its earnings forecast for fiscal 2008 to reflect the $587 million charge. Earnings per share from continuing operations are still expected to decline 19-to-24 percent. Analysts have forecast earnings per share of $1.65 to $1.86 , down from $2.27 a year ago.
Home Depot said it will cut capital spending by $1 billion over the next three years and focus on existing stores, as well as possible share repurchases. Home Depot still expects to build 55 stores in 2008, 36 in the United States. The chain currently has 1,970 U.S. stores.
Ron DeFeo, a Home Depot spokesman, said the 15 stores slated to close will remain open for seven weeks and have liquidation sales. The stores’ management teams will be offered new jobs and the remaining employees can apply for jobs at other Home Depot stores. Employees that aren’t placed will receive severance pay.
Home Depot stock was up in inter-day trading Thursday to $30.18, up $1.38 over Wednesday’s close.

LOSS PREVENTION AGENT AIDS POLICE IN ARREST by; Rick McCann http://www.privateofficer.com
A Home Depot security agent helped police arrest a Detroit man accused of bilking a 81-year-old Warren woman out of $220.
Warren police Detective Sgt. Michael Torey praised Home Depot loss prevention officer Michael Luttenberger for identifying a man who approached a woman in the store and offered to get her lower prices on doors.
Luttenberger played back a store videotape of the man, who was seen taking the money from the woman and then leaving in a beige conversion van.
Torey said Luttenberger recognized the man a week later in the Home Depot on Hoover Road and called police. The man, identified as Gregory Allan West, 55, was charged Thursday in 37th District Court with larceny by conversion, a 1-year misdemeanor.
“The store detective did an outstanding job remembering what the man looked like and getting a picture of him from the store surveillance camera,” said Torey. “West returned to the Home Depot at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday and was put on surveillance by Mr. Luttenberger until our officers arrived to arrest him.”
Torey said the woman was shopping for doors at the Home Depot at noon Oct. 4 when she was approached by a man who introduced himself as James. The man, who claimed to be a contractor, told her that he could buy the doors cheaper and install them.
Torey said the woman gave him $220 and he told her to stay by the doors and he would return. The woman waited 30 minutes, said Torey, but the man never returned.
Torey said West denied any knowledge of the transaction. He later told police that the woman came up to him and asked if he could buy windows and install them for her.
West has a lengthy criminal history. In 1992 he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob in Detroit. In 1997 he was convicted of larceny by conversion in Oak Park. In 1999 he was convicted of larceny over $100, and in 2004 was convicted in Warren of uttering and publishing.
