FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga.Sept 6 2010 — A security guard is dead after a group of gunmen opened fire inside a local grocery store.
The shooting happened at the Ingles store on Canton Road in Forsyth County just before midnight Sunday.
Forsyth County deputies have been dealing with a series of robbers in the county and have been tracking down a robbing crew, but this robbery turned deadly, officials said.
Police said a group of robbers with their faces covered held up the Ingles and killed a guard.
“We had two employees still at the store and had a third employee, who’s a security guard, deceased at the scene,” said Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton.
Police said it happened just after closing hours.
“We’re not sure just yet whether they were in the store prior to the closing or gained access after closing,” said Paxton.
Detectives from Forsyth County and the Cumming Police Department are working together to identify those responsible, officials said.
Paxton said two weeks ago, there were two other similar robberies – one at a Waffle House and the other at a convenience store. Based on those robberies, Paxton said authorities thought the robbers would become increasingly violent.
“We had some concern. This was a fear of ours,” said Paxton.
Officials said the robbers did get away with cash. The store does not have surveillance cameras.
The guard’s name has not yet been released.
