Sex offender exposes self at KMart www.privateofficer.com

MISHAWAKA IN June 7 2009 — Imagine you’re at the store with your young child when a man unzips his pants and exposes himself. Police say that’s what happened at the K-Mart on McKinley in Mishawaka. The 75-year-old suspect, Larry Hostetler, admitted he’s a sex offender right after police arrested him.
Three-year-old Jaliyiah Coleman rides her bike, laughs and smiles like any other happy little girl.
“Seeing something like that happen to her, it hurt my feelings,” said her mom, Fannie Wade.
That’s because now Jaliyiah is the victim of a sex crime.
Her grandmother and a store security guard told police they saw the whole thing.
“As we started going down the aisles and stuff, every aisle we would get to, he would be at the next corner of the aisle,” remembered Janice Wade. “And I was like ‘What is this man doing?’”
A police report says it happened in the toy aisle at K-Mart in Mishawaka Thursday afternoon.
“When I walked up to the corner and I looked around the corner, he’s standing there with his shirt up and he’s just shaking his privacy!” Janice said. “And [Jaliyiah] was just looking!”
“She’s 3,” Fannie said, before a long pause. “That’s something you wouldn’t expect your child, your niece your nephew, to have to go through. I don’t wish that on nobody.”
Jaliyiah told investigators the suspect “showed me his boy part.”
What’s more, Hostetler has a history as a sexual predator. In 1982 and 1991 a judge sentenced him for child molestation. He was convicted a third time in 2004 for “vicarious sexual gratification.”
“Your first question is how is he able to do what he’s doing?” asked Fannie. “How can he walk the streets and be a sex offender?”
“He needs to be locked up for life,” Janice added.
Through their anger, Jaliyiah’s family is struggling with what to do from here.
“Seeing something like that happen to her [on the store’s surveillance tape], it hurt my feelings. I didn’t know what to expect from it, how to go about it, If she was gonna ask questions, I didn’t know what to even do,” said Fannie, on the verge of tears.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office charged Hostetler with performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor and public indecency. His arraignment in front of a judge is scheduled to happen Monday afternoon.
Investigators took the recorded video from the store. It is part of the case, and K-Mart would not comment on the ongoing police investigation.

Security uses martial arts to fend off shoplifter www.privateofficer.com

HYANNIS MA April 5 2009 — A security officer used his martial arts training to fend off a shoplifter who attempted to stab him with a knife yesterday afternoon, according to the Barnstable police.
Curtis Chapman, 19, and his brother, Christopher, 22, both of Hyannis, were allegedly stealing video games from Kmart at about 4:42 p.m. when the security officer saw them, according to Barnstable police Sgt. Ben Baxter.
The young men were cutting security devices out of the video games using a knife and box cutters, Baxter said.
As the security guard approached the pair, they fled the store. The security guard followed.
Outside, Curtis Chapman turned on the guard and slashed at him twice with the knife, Baxter said.
The security guard used his martial arts skills to deflect the attack, and Curtis Chapman jumped over a fence and into a small pond behind Kmart, Baxter said.
Barnstable police Detective John York and Patrolman Mike Riley ran after Chapman and arrested him following a struggle at the edge of the pond, according to Baxter.
Baxter said Curtis Chapman faces charges including two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife), larceny over $250, and resisting arrest.
Christopher Chapman was charged with larceny over $250, Baxter said.

CLAYMONT, Del. Mar 25 2009 (AP) — A Delaware county man who allegedly stole two diamond rings worth more than $3,600 from a Claymont, Del., Kmart is in police custody.

Delaware State Police say Ridley Township police and Kmart security employees identified 22-year-old Nicholas Kowal of Secane, as the alleged thief. He and 24-year-old Jessica MaCauley of Collingdale, turned themselves in Friday to Philadelphia police.

Kowal allegedly ran out of the Tri-State Mall Kmart with two diamond rings after an employee showed him several pieces of jewelry. Police say MaCauley drove him away.

Police say the Golden Nugget pawn shop in the Folsom section of Ridley Township, bought the rings from Kowal on March 16.
Kowal is suspected in a similar robbery last Friday at a Kmart in Ridley the previous week.

Suspended officer aids store security with armed shoplifter http://www.privateofficer.com

Charleston WV Sept 26 2008
A Charleston police officer on paid administrative leave related to allegations of “double dipping” helped foil an alleged shoplifter carrying a Glock 9mm pistol at the Kmart on 4th Avenue Saturday.
Two loss prevention officers at the store were trying to stop Rodney Preston Shaffer, 32, from getting away when one of his arms got free and he untucked his shirt, revealing the gun, said Charleston Police Sgt. Duke Jordan.
“When [ officer Peoples] saw the pistol, he did what was natural – he acted out of instinct and got the gun,” Jordan said. “Something bad may have happened had he not gotten the weapon.”

Jordan would not confirm whether Peoples works as a loss prevention officer at Kmart.
Kmart representatives declined to comment on any aspect of this story.
“The call came over as an off-duty police officer fighting, but what it was, was the Kmart loss prevention officers,” Jordan said. “Once police got there [Shaffer] was arrested.”
Shaffer was arrested about 2 p.m., said Sgt. Aaron James, assistant chief of detectives for Charleston police.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, Shaffer had three narcotics and five other types of pills on him when he was arrested. He had tried to leave the store with seven stolen items, the complaint states
“While being detained, the defendant was found carrying a concealed weapon on his person,” according to the complaint. Peoples is not named in the complaint.
Preston was charged with misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon and shoplifting and possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute, a felony.
He is in jail on a $112,500 full surety bond issued by Magistrate Kim Aaron.

In May, Peoples was indicted by a Kanawha County grand jury on felony charges of obtaining money by a fraudulent scheme and computer fraud.
The indictment against Peoples alleges he defrauded the Town Center mall of at least $1,000 between Jan. 19, 2000, and Aug. 24, 2004, and that he used the mall’s computer system as a part of his alleged scheme.
The charges against Peoples are the same as those made against former Charleston police detective James L. “Chip” Nowling, who was sentenced to three years of probation and 300 hours of community service last year

K-Mart employees arrested in credit card scam www.privateofficer.com

Cullman Al June 1 2008

Cullman police say that they arrested two women Sunday after they allegedly stole gift cards from the local Kmart while they worked there as cashiers.
Cullman police responded to assist the loss prevention agents during an investigation of internal theft involving employees Kelly Michelle Walker, 25 of Cullman and Kristie Walker Hogeland, 35 of Hanceville.

Both were charged with theft of property in the first degree.
Capt. Max Bartlett of the Cullman Police Department said Walker and Hogeland both admitted to their involvement in the thefts, which occurred between April 16 and May 25 of this year.
According to police reports, the arrests stem from a Kmart internal investigation that the company’s loss prevention personnel conducted and then notified the sheriff department. “The system had flagged a problem and they (Kmart) became aware of it,” Bartlett said.
The investigation conducted by internal loss prevention agents revealed that Walker and Hogeland were allegedly applying for credit at Kmart with different social security numbers. “It appears at this time that they were random numbers that the two would insert into the system,” Bartlett said. “Through the credit, they would receive gift cards.”Bartlett said several of the gift cards and receipts for Kmart merchandise were recovered during the investigation. He did not know if any merchandise was recovered.
Bartlett noted that since different social security numbers were used during the crime, the credit of several individuals could have been hurt. “Kmart is probably going to rectify the situation and clear people’s credit,” he said.
Loss prevention agents confronted the two and obtained confessions from both about their involvement in the scheme.
Hogeland and Walker were transported to the Cullman County Detention Center. Both were later released on separate $10,000 bonds.Theft of property in the first degree is a Class B felony, punishable by as much as 20 years in prison.

Husband and wife team charged with theft of video games http://www.privateofficer.com

VINELAND NJ April 13 2008– A Millville couple were charged with shoplifting 38 video games valued at more than $1,000 at Kmart on South Delsea Drive after loss prevention agents stopped them on the way out of the store.
Ramon Mercado, 29, and Danielle Mercado, 28, of the 200 block of East Broad Street, were released on summonses pending court action.
A security officer saw the suspects on a surveillance camera around 2 p.m. Thursday and told police she recognized them as being involved in another shoplifting incident around the same time the previous day, police said. The woman opened game packages, took out the disks and gave them to her husband, who put them in his coat pocket, police said. The suspects are accused of taking five disks valued at $99.95 on Wednesday and 33 games Thursday valued at $915.56.
The couple’s four children — ages 11, 4, 3 and 1 — were with them along with a 32-year-old Millville woman who took custody of the children during the arrest, police said.

RETAIL SECURITY ALERT! www.privateofficer.com

RETAIL SECURITY ALERT! http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta Georgia April 6 2008
RETAIL SECURITY ALERT!

In the past eighteen days, we have reports from at least a dozen different states and retail stores of large amounts of razor blades being stolen from pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreen as well as department stores such as Walmart and K-Mart.

These thefts involve the replacement tri- blades for all brands and has netted thieves approximately $300,000 in stolen merchandise.

The razor blades, as with most HBA(health, beauty aid) items are fast cash on internet sites such as EBay and other online auctions, Craigslist and on line stores and market places as well as area flea markets and just selling them right out of the trunk of their car like one shoplifter did in New Jersey.

Most stores are reporting that the thefts wipe out entire sections of inventory and add up to thousands of dollars of merchandise in one hit.

Although there have been several arrests in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee we do not see a connection to these thefts at this time and in most cases the shoplifters are acting independently in their area. This does not mean however that gangs are not working a particular city or state because we are sure that they are.

Some stores have begun locking up these items while others do not want to inconvenience their customers anymore than they have to.

BE AWARE! If you have an HBA area it is advised to spend extra time on surveillance and make you GM’s and store associates aware of this alert!
