Shoplifter charged with assault on security agent http://www.privateofficer.com

Monmouth County NJ Feb 28 2009
Police have arrested a Union Beach man who they say threw a store security guard to the ground when the worker tried to stop him from shoplifting.
Jason S. Connelly, 27, of Cambridge Avenue, was charged Wednesday with robbery and shoplifting.
Around 6:45 p.m., Connelly stole $60 worth of sneakers and $8 worth of socks from Kohl’s on Route 35, but when a security guard confronted him, he grabbed the guard, threw him to the ground and tried to punch him in the face, said Detective Sgt. Louis Torres. Connelly then stopped resisting and pleaded with the security guard to let him return the items, police said.
At that point, police arrived and Connelly was arrested by Sgt. Vincent Imperato.
Connelly was wanted on an outstanding Tinton Falls municipal court warrant.
He was being held today at the Monmouth County Jail, Freehold Township, with bail set at $75,000.

Father, wife, son charged in store robbery www.privateofficer.com

Father, wife, son charged in store robbery http://www.privateofficer.com

Brownsville TX Jan 30 2009
A father, a wife and a son were in jail after the family was arrested for allegedly stealing perfume at a department store, Brownsville police said Wednesday.
Raul Saldaña Jr., 42, his son 21-year-old Raul Saldaña III and the father’s wife, 39-year-old Margarita Ramirez, were charged with robbery.
They were arrested Tuesday afternoon for allegedly taking two bottles of perfume from Kohl’s along the North Expressway, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique. They were each given a $15,000 bond on one count of robbery and were transported to a Cameron County detention center.
The more serious charge of robbery was used instead of shoplifting because the father knocked down a store employee causing him to hurt his knees, Manrrique said.
“Robbery applies to this case because the theft resulted in the injury of a person,” he said.
According to police the store’s loss prevention officer noticed Ramirez and the younger Saldaña just past noon as they picked up two perfume bottles and passed them off to the father. Raul Saldaña Jr. then hid the bottles under his shirt in the waistband of his pants, Manrrique said. Each bottle contained 1.7 fluid ounces of perfume. One brand was Calvin Klein Eternity and the other was Burberry London.
As the family departed the store the loss prevention officer attempted to stop Raul Saldaña Jr. but was knocked down, Manrrique said.
The family left in a white Dodge Intrepid but was later caught by police in the 1700 block of Loma Linda Street while on the way home, police said.

Retired NC police officer charged with shoplifting, assault www.privateofficer.com

Retired NC police officer charged with shoplifting, assault http://www.privateofficer.com

CONCORD, N.C.(Metro Charlotte) Dec 13 2008
wcnc.com — A retired Concord police officer is accused of stealing $900 worth of clothing and jewelry from a Kohl’s department store.
The retired officer agreed to speak exclusively with NewsChannel 36 on Thursday under the condition that we not record her face.
She said she is disgraced by what she did and doesn’t expect any special treatment from the justice system.
We spoke with a remorseful Janine Gebhardt at her home.
“In a million years I would never have thought I’d have done something like this,” she said.
Police say Gebhardt walked into Kohl’s with an empty handbag. But when she paid for a few items and left the store, that handbag was then bulging.
“I’m willing to admit that I did something wrong,” Gebhardt said.
When she got back to her car, she explains that a loss prevention officer asked to see her handbag.
“I said, ‘No, you have no right. Why do you want to see my pocket book?’ And we started fighting over it,” she said.
After a short scuffle, Gebhardt says she pulled out her retired Concord Police Department badge.
“I said, ‘No, don’t. I’m a retired police officer. I’m not going to cause you any more problems, I promise,’” Gebhardt said.
In her handbag, police found $900 worth of stolen watches, clothing, and earrings. She was arrested and charged with larceny and assault.
She says she has prayed for forgiveness ever since.
“I’ve just disgraced myself … my family, the police department, the whole police profession,” Gebhardt said.
Officers with the Concord Police Department say Gebhardt was allowed to keep her badge when she retired several years ago. They say that is a fairly common practice among departments.
Gebhardt says she wishes she never showed the badge that day.

Kohl’s loss prevention agent accused of excessive force www.privateofficer.com

Kohl’s loss prevention agent accused of excessive force http://www.privateofficer.com

WEST VALLEY, Utah Dec 7 2008 (ABC 4 News) – A security officer is coming under fire for using excessive force.Last night a 15-year old girl was detained by a loss prevention officer at the Kohl’s Department Store in West Valley.
Police said she was accused of shoplifting, but family members and a witness question whether the manner in which she was arrested was proper.
In fact, one of the witnesses captured the situation on her cell phone. The video showed the 15-year old girl pinned to the ground and the security officer on top of her.
“This man grabbed my daughter’s arm and threw her to the ground and then got on top of her,” said Lourdes Montenegro who was shopping with her daughter. “My daughter kept asking what happened, what happened and I started shouting at him, what’s going on, what did she do? He would never answer us.
”Witnesses said the girl was pinned to the ground for about twenty minutes until police arrived. Montenegro eventually learned her daughter was accused of shoplifting.Even if that was the case, she says her daughter shouldn’t have been treated that way.
“He threw my daughter on the ground and she wanted to move and he would twist her arm harder and then he put his knee on her back so that she wouldn’t move,” Montenegro said.According to Montenegro her daughter was looking at jewelry and took it out of the case, but her daughter claimed she put the jewelry back.
There was a surveillance camera near the jewelry department. Kohl’s Department Store refused to comment about the case and referred all calls to West Valley Police.Police did issue a citation against the girl claiming there was evidence to support a shoplifting charge. Alvernia Segura said anyone accused of shoplifting shouldn’t be treated the way she saw the 15-year old girl was. She recorded the scene on her cell phone.
“When I think back on it, I was just shocked,” Segura said. “I thought he could have handled it in some other manner than throwing her on the ground and sitting on top of her and bending her arm up.”Today the girl was taken to the doctor. X-rays were ordered.
Her mother said she may have a separated shoulder. Her arm was covered with bruises.”He didn’t act like a security guard, he acted like a beast in the way the way he treated this child, that’s what this man did,” said the girl’s mother.
