Shoplifter dies in struggle with Wal-Mart security www.privateofficer.com

Dunwoody GA (metro Atlanta) Dec 21 2009 Police are investigating the death Saturday of an alleged shoplifter after he was forcibly apprehended by Wal-Mart loss prevention officers.

Marty Bridges, 38, was attempting to flee the store, at 4725 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., when the officers grabbed him, Dunwoody Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Carlson said. Another shopper intervened and a slight altercation ensued.

“It was basically a big pile-up,” he said. “They had him pinned on the ground to keep him from running.”

When police arrived around 1 p.m., two bystanders were administering CPR, but they were unable to save Bridges. He was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Northside Hospital.

It’s unclear what Bridges allegedly tried to steal, but Carlson said the amount of the item or items was less than $300, and would have amounted to a misdemeanor were he tried and convicted of shop lifting.

Wal-Mart employees were able to recover the item or items, police said.

It doesn’t appear that any undue force was used on the suspect, Carlson said. An autopsy is underway.

Security guard charged with murder in Florida www.privateofficer.com

Coconut Creek Fla Oct 25 2009
A man barged into his ex-girlfriend’s Coconut Creek home on Saturday, stabbing her and killing a friend when he tried to protect her, police said.
Paul Gayle, a 28-year-old security guard with a state-issued weapons license, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed burglary.
Coconut Creek police said Joy Stewart, 36, ended her relationship with Gayle last week and was spending Friday evening with a friend she recently met: 32-year-old Hasting Clarke.
But shortly after midnight Saturday, Gayle showed up at Stewart’s home on the 4100 block of Northwest 43rd Way.
He was planning to carry out a threat he’d made Thursday, said Detective Angela Hofer, a police spokeswoman.
After barging in, Gayle cornered Stewart in a room and stabbed her several times — but Clarke walked in to save her, Hofer said. Stewart seized the opportunity, grabbing a cordless home phone and driving off in her car while calling 911. Seconds later, she flagged down Officer Alejandro Escobar, who found her wounded and frantic.
He and three other officers rushed to her house and arrested Gayle, who was trying to get back into his car, police said.
They also found Clarke, who was killed during the fight.

KY physical ed teacher accused of student relationship www.privateofficer.com

LOUISVILLE, KY Aug 5 2009 (WAVE) – A physical education teacher and girls basketball coach at Butler High School has been fired for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student. He’s also accused of accepting money from students so they could skip physical activities or have their grades changed.
Coach Michael “Eddy” Wilson taught physical education and coached girls basketball at Butler High School for several years with a good record, but recently, JCPS records indicate parents began coming forward with allegations they were hearing from their children about a relationship between Wilson and an unidentified student.
Parents and students registering for classes at Butler Monday were shocked by the allegations. “Teachers, in my perspective, are there to teach me, not to do anything more,” said Tachae Sowell, an incoming freshman at Butler.
“It’s sickening, and it’s scary too,” said Thereasa Sowell, Tachae’s grandmother.
After reviewing the complaints, JCPS spokeswoman Lauren Roberts said school officials conducted an investigation.
“We did, after reviewing records and evidence, confirm that there was indeed an improper relationship with the student,” Roberts said. “I know everyone is asking does that mean there was a sexual relationship – we were not able to verify that. But there was indeed, based on phone records, an inappropriate relationship under way between the two of them.”
And according to cell phone records, the student and Wilson exchanged more than 555 text messages and calls totaling more than 5,000 minutes from December 2008 to April 2009 – and many of those calls and texts were after midnight.
JCPS’s investigation also revealed that Wilson allegedly took the student on a ski trip to Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana, and that the two reportedly spent a lot of time together after school hours.
The investigation took an unexpected twist, Roberts says, because “students were being charged $3 to not participate in some activities such as running; and then in a couple of cases, there were some students who said their grades were improved based on paying. At least 100 students were able to tell us they paid money or had knowledge of others who tried to get out of class.”
According to the investigation, school officials found over $1,000 in Wilson’s desk. Wilson said he was going to use the money to pay the basketball team’s expenses.
Students registering for Butler told us they’re relieved Wilson won’t be there this year.
“I like gym, and I don’t want a teacher looking at me that way,” Sowell said. “I don’t’ like that type of attention from an adult.”
In a statement given by Wilson to JCPS, he said that he was just being a mentor to that student.
Wilson was hired at Butler in 2003, and had no previous disciplinary problems or complaints before being fired last week.
JCPS has notified Child Protective Services about the issue.

Police charge man with shooting Fla wildlife officer www.privateofficer.com

COCOA, Fla. July 18 2009 — Police in Brevard County said they’ve made an arrest in the shooting of a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer.
Police said 23-year-old Christopher Eddy was arrested after he was found hiding in a sand dune on Melbourne Beach.
FWC Officer Van Streety, a 10-year FWC veteran, was patrolling near the intersection of Satellite Boulevard and State Road 520 in Brevard County when he was shot multiple times during a routine stop.
“If I wanted to kill him, I could have,” Eddy said after he was arrested. “I shot him in his vest on purpose.”
Streety was saved by a bulletproof vest — and a special coin he had in his pocket, which helped stop one of the bullets. (See Images Of The Coin)
Police said Eddy was stopped by the officer, a struggle started and, according to reports, Eddy pulled out a gun and shot the officer several times.
Streety was attempting to arrest Eddy for warrants issued from Brevard County for multiple traffic violations, officials said.
Eddy said he shot the officer during the routine traffic stop because he had prior traffic tickets and had a warrant out for his arrest for driving without a license.
“I felt my freedom was being violated,” Eddy said. “It was just unjust they way they treated me. They pulled me over, gave me some traffic tickets and sent me right to the court.”
Investigators said they’ve been putting the pressure on Eddy and apparently he couldn’t take it anymore. They said he made one big mistake leading to his capture on Friday when he tried to steal a car from an armed neighbor.
Investigators said they brought the 46-hour manhunt to an end with “luck, intensity and aggression.”
Police said when Eddy tried to steal the car and he was approached by the armed homeowner, Eddy took off running.
“He kept yelling out to the homeowner, ‘I’m homeless, I’m homeless,’” said Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Major Andrew Walters. “You could see he was bug-bitten, but he did see a firearm.”
Walters said when police found Eddy, the fugitive emerged from the sand dunes and turned himself in.
“He led them to a makeshift camp he had been staying in and showed them the firearm,” Walters said.
On Thursday, Eddy’s girlfriend was arrested and is still being held in a Brevard County jail without bond.
A judge said that any attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer “tears at the fabric of our society” and that he wanted her to stay in jail until she comes before a jury on charges of accessory to attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
Tammi Temple, 37, was arrested Thursday, the same day that what was later identified as a shrapnel bomb was found at her home.
Police found the shrapnel bomb when they served a search warrant at Temple’s home in Melbourne in connection with Wednesday night’s shooting of the FWC law enforcement officer.
Investigators said Temple was in the car with Eddy when he shot the officer. Police said she didn’t come to Streety’s aide but rather helped Eddy get away. Deputies said Floyd Johnson helped Eddy escape, as well. He has been charged with being an accessory after the shooting.
“All I want is a peaceful life,” Eddy said. “I just want some freedom. I guess I’ll never get out of jail for this dumb (expletive).”

The employee asked him for a receipt and the man showed him a receipt from earlier in the day. When the employee found it ”suspicious” and tried to detain the customer, the man hit him with the cart knocking him to the ground. The shoplifter ran into the parking lot with another man and they left in a blue car with dark tint. The surveillance video showed one of the items was a boxed car seat and the other items could not be identified.

Joseph Wilson, 21, of 26 Timrod Drive was arrested after police said he stole more than $100 worth of merchandise from Marshalls.

Gastonia NC
A Gastonia man accused of shoplifting faces an additional charge of identity theft after he allegedly gave police another man’s name and birthdate Friday.
Francisco Javier Lopez, 23, of 1639 Greenview Drive, pocketed a Bluetooth wireless earpiece inside Target on New Hope Drive, according to a magistrate’s order affidavit. He also allegedly tried to break open a camcorder box, but placed it back on a store shelf after failing to open the packaging. The Bluetooth kit is sold for $69.69, the affidavit states.
Lopez gave Gastonia Police Officer J. Alfonso another man’s name and date of birth inside the store, Alfonso wrote in the affidavit. He provided his correct name when taken to the Gaston County Jail.
Lopez was charged with shoplifting-concealment of goods, injury to personal property and identity theft. He was jailed under a $2,500 secured bond.

MANATEE COUNTY Fla – At first, it seemed that a man who set fire to racks of clothes at a Manatee County Wal-Mart store Thursday was just an angry customer who had been refused a refund at the service desk.
But later, Manatee investigators learned the man was was actually trying to return stolen merchandise from what may be an organized shoplifting ring.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous,” said sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow. “He went in there, stole their stuff, then comes right back in and goes to customer service and tries to exchange what he just stole and then gets upset over that.”
Damage to merchandise and loss of sales at the Wal-Mart at State Road 70 and U.S. 301 could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, Wal-Mart officials said Friday.
After the fire in the men’s department, the Wal-Mart was closed for 11 hours. No one was injured in the fire.
Deputies say the fire was started around 4 p.m. Thursday; the man who set the blaze escaped.
About two hours later, Manatee deputies arrested Phillip R. Wright, 41, of Monroe, Louisiana at a Wal-Mart on Lockwood Ridge Road and University Parkway where he was again trying to return the same items he tried to return earlier.
Wright has been charged with first-degree arson and retail theft as well as possession of crack cocaine after deputies found drugs on him, arrest reports said.
Deputies also arrested Chester Hayes, Jr., 49, of West Monroe, La., on charges of retail theft. Police say Hayes acted as an accomplice, waiting outside the store in a car and staying in contact with Wright by two-way radio.
According to Wal-Mart security, Wright walked around the State Road 70 Wal-Mart store with a cart picking up soda bottles, some water filters and accessories.
He picked a baseball cap and put it on his head.
He then bagged the items in a Wal-Mart plastic bag and left the store without paying.
He returned about 10 minutes later and tried to get a refund for the items valued at around $250.
Staff refused because he did not have a receipt. Wright threatened them before heading to the menswear department.
Surveillance video shows Wright bending down for a few seconds beneath three clothes racks in the men’s department, said Wal-Mart security guard Christopher Foy.
“I observed him crouched down on all three racks that caught on fire,” Foy said.
“The flames were anywhere from 15 to 20 feet. It was quickly contained; the associates acted very well,” he said.
Foy called nearby Wal-Mart stores with a description of the man and the items he was trying to refund.
He soon received a call from the Wal-Mart store on Lockwood Ridge saying they had a customer waiting in line at the customer service desk matching the description.
Foy called deputies and Wright was arrested while still waiting in line.
Bristow said the use of an accomplice and two-way radios suggested an organized operation.
“That tells us they’re maybe not first-timers doing this,” said Bristow.
“The fact he’s out-of-state tells us maybe he’s been been doing in other areas.”
Wal-Mart officials would not say exactly how much damage the fire caused, but said they lost sales when the store was closed from 4 p.m. Thursday until 3 a.m. Friday.
“We have loss of sales; we have clothing that we have to take into account we had to change out all the air filters in the conditioning units,” said Dana Cox, store co-manager.

JACKSONVILLE, FL — The surveillance system at a local department store did its job Wednesday.
A loss prevention officer at the Kohl’s store in Mandarin says he saw two people take things into the dressing room and emerge in a suspicious way.
By the time police got there, they knew the car they were looking for, and somebody was inside. He was detained by officers, who then waited for the two suspects to leave the store.
Melissia Ann McDonald, 19, came out first. The loss prevention officer in the store had seen her go into a dressing room with two GPS units. He says she came out of the dressing room, put the boxes under some clothes in a shopping cart, and left the store.
Police were waiting for her as she got to the car. They found the GPS units under her clothes, and some new shoes on her feet. She had not paid for any of the items.
She told police she stole all of the items to sell on the street.
Keven Smith, 27, came out next. The loss prevention officer had watched him follow a similar pattern, taking something into the dressing room and covering up the box upon his exit.
As he was walking toward the car, he saw the police officer. The officer didn’t find anything on Smith, but walked back to the spot from which Smith had spotted him, and found a digital camera.
The serial number on the camera matched the serial number on a box found under a pile of clothes in a shopping cart.
He says he didn’t go into the store with McDonald because he knows she’s a thief.
While the first person police found in the car was released, police arrested McDonald and Smith.

Kennesaw GA
The wife of a Kennesaw city councilman is facing shoplifting charges after she allegedly took more than $300 worth of merchandise from an Acworth department store.
Sandre Killingsworth, wife of Councilman Tim Killingsworth, was charged May 29 with one felony charge of shoplifting, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. She was released on $2,500 bond, according to the Cobb Sheriff’s Office
Killingsworth allegedly stole one pair of pants, a shirt, one dress and several swimwear items from the Kohl’s department store on Cobb Parkway, the Journal said.
“When all the facts in this case are discovered, we believe they will certainly clear up any confusion,” Tim Killingsworth told the Journal.

Utica, N.Y.
Two Dolgeville residents are facing charges for allegedly stealing food from the Price Chopper Supermarket in North Utica.
According to Utica police, Jeffrey Winters, 52, and Pamela Van Slyke, 48, both of Howard Street, Dolgeville, entered the store on May 1 and were seen on the video surveillance system loading a grocery cart full of food items and leaving the store without paying for it.
According to police, Winters, who was charged with petit larceny, sixth-degree conspiracy and trespassing, was arrested previously for shoplifting at Price Chopper and was warned not to return to any Price Chopper store.
Van Slyke was charged with petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy.

E Dundee IL
An assistant manager at Walmart in East Dundee tried to outwit the store’s video surveillance system but was caught trying to steal $1,500 from the store, according to police.
Jacqueline E. Vanovermeiren, 55, of the 4900 block of Butterfield Road in Hillside, was arrested and charged with felony theft, which typically carries a sentence of two to five years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines.
Police say Vanovermeiren took $4,000 from the store’s safe and used $2,500 of the cash to replenish the store’s ATM. She then returned the remaining money to the safe, turned off the video camera in the safe room, removed the $1,500 and turned the camera back on, according to police.
Vanovermeiren gave a written statement to police admitting the theft, police said. East Dundee Police Chief Terry Mee said his department learned of the theft when it was contacted by Walmart security.
Vanovermeiren asked to be represented by a public defender at a Wednesday morning bond hearing.
She will have to post $1,500 to be released. Vanovermeiren told a judge she would be able to post bond by the end of the day Wednesday.
Her next court date is set for June 16 at the Kane County courthouse.

Charged with retail theft and possession of stolen property were Katerina Mandryk, 44, and Yevgena Polyulyak, 46, both of 8632 N. Nordica, Chicago. Reports say the female suspects left the store without paying for $374 worth of clothing, and the suspects were also found in possession of $1,359.50 worth of clothing taken from other area department stores. No court date information was available.
Katherine Chelcun, 20, of 442 Sommerset, Grayslake, was charged May 26 with retail theft and possession of stolen property at JC Penney, 4 Hawthorn Center. Reports say the female suspect left store without paying for $134 worth of clothing and jewelry and was also found in possession of property that was stolen from Macy’s. She was released on $75 cash bond pending a June 15 court date in Mundelein.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Starting in approximately January, 2007, investigators with Macy’s started to note a loss of inventory in several specialty items. Investigators started to monitor these items and monitor eBay sites advertising these specialty items.
The sleuths say they were able to determine that large amounts of merchandise – similar to the merchandise being stolen from their stores – was being sold on eBay by a subject identified only as Louise Corbin.
During Macy’s investigation, they report being able to observe an adult female subject stealing several high end clothing items on several occasions, but where unable to make an arrest.
At least once, they were even able to see the suspect getting into a vehicle via surveillance cameras and were able to obtain a license plate. This was later used to help determine that the vehicle was registered to suspect Corbin.
In September 2007, Corbin was arrested at a Nordstrom Store in Portland, for shoplifting over $1,000.00 in high-end clothing items. She has since been found guilty of that theft.
Investigators say the arrest of Corbin at Nordstrom did not stop her from stealing. She reportedly continued to steal high-end merchandise at Macy’s. In October, 2008, Corbin was arrested for shoplifting at the Clackamas, Macy’s store.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office became involved in the investigation and began working closely with investigators with Macy’s and Nordstrom. As a result, the Sheriff’s Office was able to obtain a search warrant for Corbin’s residence, in West Linn. During the execution of this search warrant, hundreds of suspected stolen clothing, accessories and jewelry items were seized as evidence.
Additional evidence seized included information that Corbin was selling stolen items on eBay under a business she called ‘Fifi’s Boutique’. Corbin was conducting her business out of her home in West Linn.
It is suspected that Corbin is responsible for over $150,000 loss to Macy’s and Nordstrom over the past year-and-a-half. All indications are that Corbin worked alone during this criminal activity.
The case was presented to the Clackamas County Grand Jury in May 2008, and an indictment for Louise Corbin was returned. She is charged with 17 counts of first-degree Theft, 3 counts of first-degree Theft by Receiving, 13 counts of Computer Crime, and one count of second-degree Theft.
An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday, 06-02-09, for Louise Marie Corbin; age 62. Corbin was arrested by Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office investigators on the newly issued warrants at her home on Woodsprite Court, in West Linn. She was lodged on the existing warrants today, with a total bail amount set at $100,000.
Louise Marie Corbin is scheduled for arraignment on these charges today, Tuesday, June 02, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in the Clackamas County Circuit, in Oregon City.
It is also reported that Corbin was found guilty in 2008 in Multnomah County for shoplifting from Nordstrom (Theft I) and was placed on misdemeanor probation for that conviction.

Jaimie L. Dowler, 20, of 401 N. Western Ave., was arrested on a charge of theft Sunday, June 14, according to a sheriff’s report.
Dowler allegedly put some makeup and perfume in her purse while shopping at a store in the 2700 block of East Main Street around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the report.
An employee stopped Dowler as she attempted to leave, and she said she had to go out to the parking lot to tell her mother she was in trouble and the employee kept her purse, according to the report.
The employee kept Dowler’s purse and later turned it over to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Dowler contacted the sheriff’s office and asked for her purse back because her keys were in it, according to the report.

High school student charged with armed assault http://www.privateofficer.com

Allentown PA Feb 7 2009
A 17-year-old Allen High School boy was charged as an adult with trying to stab a man with a pair of scissors Thursday afternoon in front of the school, according to court records.
An Allentown police officer and a school security guard who were monitoring school dismissal saw what was happening and were able to stop David J. Gibbs of 131 S. Hall St. before he could injure the unidentified victim, who Assistant Chief Ron Manescu said vanished with the wave of students leaving the school at 3:06 p.m.
Police said Gibbs took several swipes with the scissors to the victim’s neck. The police officer said the incident happened in front of the school in the 100 block of N. 17th Street when Gibbs ran toward the victim with a pair of 5- to 6-inch scissors protruding between his fingers.
He took four to five punch-like thrusts to the victim’s neck and back with the point of the scissors sticking out from between his fingers, according to court documents.
Gibbs was taken down by the officer and security guard before the intended victim was injured. Gibbs admitted stealing the scissors from the school and putting them between his fingers because he ”thought there would a problem outside after school,” police said.
Gibbs was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possessing an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon on school property and simple assault.
He was arraigned before District Judge Patricia Engler and sent to Lehigh County Prison under $150,000 bail, police said.

Security business booming as shoplifting spikes www.privateofficer.com

Security business booming as shoplifting spikes http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA. Jan 11 2009
bizjournal.com

A downturn in the economy can oftentimes bring out the worst in people, and that includes a rise in shoplifting.

But that unfortunate trend is providing an economic boon to the security industry.
Charles Wall, president and CEO of Creative Security Co. Inc. of San Jose, said he anticipates hiring as many as 150 additional people over the next six months to work in on-site security, alarm installation and sales jobs. Wall, a San Jose Police Department veteran, retired in 2002 to start the security firm, which provides on-site and event security, private investigations and background screening. In recent weeks he’s met regularly with retailers who are stepping up security measures in stores.
“We saw a pretty substantial increase in shoplifting during October and November,” Wall said. “In a lot of instances, you see people taking pharmaceutical items for themselves or their kids because they’ve lost jobs and just can’t pay for the stuff anymore. It has been bad in recent months, but there’s no question it’s going to get a lot worse this year.”
Jesse Mahal, manager of Golden State Security and Patrol in Sunnyvale, said his company has also seen an increase in the number of retail clients, though he attributes most of it to the annual increase in retailers’ security needs during the holidays. He also anticipates a rise in shoplifting-related business during the coming year.
Wall said most retailers will tolerate a certain level of loss before they beef up security and other loss-prevention efforts. In 2007, U.S. retailers recovered more than $83 million in merchandise as a result of shoplifting arrests, a nearly 8 percent increase over 2006, according to an annual retail theft survey conducted by Jack L. Hayes International Inc., a Florida security company.
Law enforcement statistics in San Jose add credence to the growing shoplifting trend. Enrique Garcia, spokesman for the San Jose Police Department, said the city averaged about 200 shoplifting arrests a month from January through October last year, which would put the city on track for at least 2,400 such arrests in 2008. The total in 2007 was 2,117 and 2,160 in 2006, Garcia said.
Shoplifting statistics are sobering. In the United States alone, it’s estimated $35 million in goods are stolen from retailers daily or $13 billion annually, according to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, a Jericho, N.Y., nonprofit group. There are estimated to be 27 million shoplifters nationally, or one in every 11 people.
An early December survey of 52 of the largest and fastest-growing retail companies in the nation by the Retail Industry Leaders Association of Arlington, Va., found that 84 percent of respondents reported increased rates of theft and amateur shoplifting in 2008 compared with 2007.
“The current uptick in unlawful activity is an unfortunate yet unsurprising consequence of an economy in distress,” said Paul Jones, vice president of asset protection for the association.
But shoplifting isn’t the only source of economic good fortune for security firms. A growing number of Bay Area companies in a variety of industries are also beefing up security to deal with employee layoffs, Wall said.
At-a-glance
• 75 percent of shoplifters are adults• 55 percent of shoplifters said they started as teenagers• Most shoplifters steal items worth $2 to $200 in a single incident• 73 percent of adult shoplifters and 72 percent of minors do so on impulse.

On The Job -Retail Security Agents –(PART TWO) www.privateofficer.com

On The Job -Retail Security Agents http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA. Nov 29 2008
BY: Rick McCann
NTL. ASSOC. PRIVATE OFFICERS
http://www.privateofficer.com/
Her day starts with a review of security video footage from the stockroom and loading dock area as well as several other sensitive areas of the store.
She sips her coffee and scans the video for any telltale signs of internal theft or someone found where they shouldn’t have been.
On this day, she spots an electronics department associate in the electronics security cage several times without any apparent reason.
The associate doesn’t leave the area with anything visibly in their hands but they could have concealed merchandise on their person so she makes an incident report of this and she decides that she’ll set up a covert camera inside the cage later tonight after the store is closed and all employees have left.
The rest of the video showed basic activity so she calls one of her loss prevention agents on the 2-way radio and they meet at the center of the store and take a walk through together looking for shoplifting activity as they talk.
The LP agent fills her boss in on a shoplifting case that she had the night before that resulted in three arrests. The three had concealed a laptop computer and tried fleeing with it. The LP had been watching them since they first had entered the store because of something that just didn’t look right about the trio and as an experienced loss prevention agent she decided to observe them for a while and it didn’t take long for them to prove her suspicions right.
While the average shoplifter ranges in age from 12-80 and from every employment and financial background imaginable, there are a few things that store security agents watch for. Big empty bags are his biggest red flags, heavy coats when the weather is warm, lingering in an aisle for long periods of time, or piling shopping carts full of expensive electronics or clothing signal possible door busters, (those who run for the door with the cart) merchandise stockpiled in an out of way area of the store usually is a sign that one person planted it there for another to pick up later and there are other signs as well.
Karen Brown spent nine years as a police officer before her career came to an end as a speeding drunk driver crashed into her patrol vehicle as she was on a traffic stop and issuing a citation. She sustained multiple fractures, lacerations and other injuries and although she recovered and went back to her beat four months later, she continued to experience flashbacks and sleepless nights and post traumatic anxiety which eventually led her to resigning and taking a retail security position. A decision that she doesn’t regret as she now leads a team of thirty agents in numerous stores as a regional loss prevention director. She said that she has fully made the changeover from a law enforcement officer to a private security agent and that she thoroughly enjoys her work. Much of her time these days is spent looking at the paper trail of refund scammers or shipping errors or video of suspected dishonest employees, credit card, and check fraud suspects, investigating slip and falls and training and mentoring her loss prevention staff. And she often works on cases with her friends and former co-workers at police headquarters as well as numerous other local, state, and federal agencies. She has initiated and ran joint investigations with area police, the U.S. Marshal’s, U.S. Secret Service and several state law enforcement agencies. It’s something different everyday Brown says with a smile on her face. I can really see myself doing this until I’m too old to see or drive or my mind is completely gone, she laughs as she glances across the wall of video monitors.
Undercover security officers are used by retail stores to stop theft, both internally (employees) and externally (customers). These officers are plain-clothed and blend in with shoppers. Others monitor and record suspicious activity or thefts in progress from a security officer somewhere off from the sales floor. It’s not like it was twenty years ago when Craig Moore first started with the K-Mart company. We would have to climb up onto these little platforms that were in the back stockroom area with one way glass that looked out onto certain areas of the store. Sometimes we’d be stuck there for hours observing a particular employee or we’d have to maneuver from one perch to the other trying to keep an eye on a shoplifter while staying out of sight. Once a shoplifter concealed the merchandise we then had to race to the floor while trying to keep an eye on them until they left without paying for the stuff. It was hard to do but we got the job done and caught the thief he said shaking his head. Now, there’s camera everywhere and no more climbing or jumping around Moore laughs as he points to a female mannequin. See her eyes, those are cameras. Pretty cool he says with another hearty laugh. Yup, we got it much easier than the store detectives did ten or twenty years ago.
Retail security agents do have the authority to stop and detain you and in certain states “arrest” a suspected shoplifter or person involved in criminal activity within their store or on the store’s property. Although most of the time loss prevention agents are busy with theft issues, they can also find themselves in the middle of a domestic fight, child abuse case, assault incident, lost or missing children searches, “peeping toms” incidents and an array of other criminal activity that they are called to.
The job is high-stress as the demand to meet certain productivity levels creates a lot of pressure. Though there might not be a quota put on the security agents, like law enforcement officers there is an expectation of production and job performance which really equates to monthly quotas Brown said. If a full time loss prevention agent in a high traffic or a high shrinkage store is only averaging three or four apprehensions a month there is a problem she said. Maybe they need to be retained on what to look for or maybe they spend too much time talking to store associates or on the phone with friends and family. While there is no certain number of shoplifters that a loss prevention agent should catch each month, in most cases there is a goal based on what previous security agents accomplished in that particular store. Some agents are very good at their job and will easily apprehend 20-30 each month while others average 6-10 apprehensions. The numbers depend on store location, volume of sales, floor traffic, and a number of other criteria that loss prevention management considers when looking at productivity.
While the entry level pay for loss prevention agents exceed minimum wages by a few bucks more and most stores offer some form of medical insurance, vacation and holiday pay and other perks not often seen in a uniform security guard position, no one is getting rich. But there is plenty of room for advancement especially with large box type stores who are still expanding and opening new stores. The next level above an agent would be a store security manager and then a district loss prevention manager position and from there a regional position which is where someone can make a very good living Brown said. It doesn’t take long either. I started out as an agent and three years later I’m the area manager so as you can see there is opportunity in retail security if you like the security business.

Robbers flee, money flies and tires go pop www.privateofficer.com

Robbers flee, money flies and tires go pop http://www.privateofficer.com

LAURINBURG NC Nov 18 2008
fayobserver.com — Twenty-dollar bills were fluttering from the windows of the Nissan Altima speeding up the highway at more than 100 mph.
“It was raining money last night,” Laurinburg Police Capt. Kim Monroe said Monday.
The cash was coming from two robbery suspects trying to get rid of evidence while they were trying to get away from police, investigators said.
The events that led up to the chase began with a robbery at the Big Lots store on South Main Street about 8 p.m. Sunday, Monroe said.
Two men carrying guns forced the five store workers on duty into an office and made the manager open the safe, Monroe said.
The men used rope to tie the employees together and left in a Nissan with about $2,000, Monroe said.
Moments later, Officer Robert Carlisle pulled a Nissan over on North Main Street for a traffic violation. Then he heard the description of the robbers and the getaway car.
As additional officers arrived, the men sped away in the Nissan, headed north toward Aberdeen on U.S. 15-501.
Police were assisted by Scotland County deputies and wildlife officers, Monroe said.
Speeds topped 120 mph, Monroe said.
The car was finally stopped by using spiked strips that deflated the tires, Monroe said.
The men — identified as Michael Anthony Leslie and Jeremy Donaldson Ross — were arrested and charged with robbing Big Lots.
Police reported finding a BB pistol in the car, Monroe said.
The two also have been charged with two robberies reported last week at the Dollar Tree and Pizza Hut in Laurinburg, Monroe said.
Witnesses in those incidents said one man wore a blue bandana to cover part of his face and the other wore white Latex gloves.
Big Lots workers told police that one of the robbers was wearing a blue bandana, Monroe said. Police also found Latex gloves in the vehicle.
Leslie, 38, of the 100 block of Charlie Lane in Carthage, and Ross, 28, of the 1700 block of Lower Moncure Road in Sanford, are charged with three counts each of armed robbery and conspiring to commit armed robbery; nine counts of kidnapping; and speeding to elude arrest.
Both have prior records, Monroe said.
In 1986, Leslie was sentenced in Oklahoma to 15 years for second-degree murder, according to the state’s Department of Correction records.
Leslie was released in February 2001, according to records.
Ross is wanted in Columbia, S.C., on armed robbery charges, Monroe said.
Both are in the Scotland County jail with bail set at $1million each.

Security officers aid crash victims http://www.privateofficer.com

An out-of-control car crashed into a ditch and catapulted into a busy flea market south of Sebastopol on Sunday, coming to rest on its roof just yards from booths and shoppers. As spectacular as the post-collision scene appeared, no one at the market was injured, and the two women in the car apparently suffered only minor injuries, according to the CHP.
“It’s a miracle,” said Bob DeCaro, a security officer at Midgley’s Country Flea Market off Highway 116 south of Bloomfield Road.
It appears the car, a late-model Toyota Camry, was being driven toward Sebastopol about 11:45 a.m. when for some reason, the driver veered hard to the left across traffic.
The car ran over a small ditch, clipping a stand of mailboxes, crossed a dirt driveway, careened over another ditch and into a chain-link fence surrounding the flea market.
At least two large chunks of the car’s fender were left on the driveway.
The car then catapulted into the pampas grass and small trees lining the second ditch, flipping over and landing on its roof inside an unused parking area of the market.
“I heard a big bang and turned and saw it flip,” said Rolinda Smith, who runs a booth about 60 yards away. “I couldn’t understand what happened.”
Another nearby booth operator, Dawn Silveira, said she turned to see the car in the air.
“As it was flying, it did a 180-degree turn in the air and landed on its back.”
Mya Weston, whose sales booth is the nearest table to the crash, about 30 yards away, said she didn’t hear any brake sounds before the wreck.
“I just heard crunching in the bushes,” she said. “I looked around, and it just did a flip in the air. It was all in slow motion. It felt like five minutes, but it was five seconds. I thought it was going to blow.”
DeCaro said he rushed to the crash site, where an off-duty sheriff’s deputy and registered nurse were looking after the women.
“I was trying to back people off,” he said.
Another security guard, Sergio Cuevas, said the two women were conscious but “super shocked.”
A CHP officer accompanied the women, possibly a mother and daughter, to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to try to determine what happened.
The women’s names were unavailable late Sunday.
Though details were still sketchy, CHP Sgt. Jeff Abrams suspected the driver may have swerved to avoid traffic that routinely backs up along that stretch of Highway 116.
There was no indication the driver was impaired by drug or alcohol use, he said. The car was registered out of Burlingame, so the occupants may have been shoppers visiting the area’s many antique and second-hand stores.

Kevin Michael Coletti Duckworth was treated for a broken jaw and laceration to the chin, said Statesville Police Department Interim Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton.

Five people indicted in ID theft operation www.privateofficer.com

Five people indicted in ID theft operation http://www.privateofficer.com

Rocky Mountain News
Denver CO. Nov 7 2008
Five people have been indicted in an ID theft operation in which they allegedly used bogus credit cards and bought methamphetamines with the cash they got after reselling purchased items, Aurora police announced Wednesday.
The Denver grand jury returned indictments last week against the five charging them with numerous counts, including violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, theft, forgery, identity theft and conspiracy to commit computer crime, forgery, and theft.
The ring’s alleged leader, Shadwick Weaver, 35, was in custody in the Douglas County Jail when the indictment was handed down, police said. Weaver is facing 56 criminal counts and was being held on $500,000 bail.
Detectives from the police department’s economic crimes unit and a crime analyst began investigating the group in April after the found out that they may have been involved in a variety of white-collar crimes in Aurora and the north Denver metro area, detective Robert Friel, police spokesman, said.
The group members allegedly got hold of victims’ identities by burglarizing homes, breaking into cars and vehicle larceny, the detective said. The ring also possessed equipment that they used to manufacture documents such as counterfeit checks, credit cards, Social Security cards, drivers licenses, photo identities and employee badges. Detectives believe the group possessed about 300 such bogus documents, Friel said.
“We executed a search warrant and we believe we took away their tools that they were using to carry out the scheme,” the detective said.
In some cases, they would buy merchandise using the counterfeit checks or credit cards. The ring’s members would then resell the goods to make profit, which would then be used to buy methamphetamines, Friel said.
Detectives also think that some members would present a “temporary card” to a merchant to make purchases. However, the card would not have the magnetic stripe on the back of the card. Friel said that lack of special security features should let merchants know that the card is fake. Besides, he said, “temporary cards” do not exist.
“It’s a good warning for the business community; do not accept cards that are missing the traditional components of a credit or debit card,” Friel said.
The four others who were indicted and are in custody include James Bierce, 41; Carrie Robinson, 25; and Kelly Head, 35. Detectives continued to search for Levi Fairbanks, 25.
Anyone with information about Fairbanks’ whereabouts should contact detectives at 303-739-6142.

Former football player charged in airport disturbance www.privateofficer.com

Former football player charged in airport disturbance http://www.privateofficer.com

crimebeat news
Kennewick WA Nov 6 2008
A former Tri-Cities Fever football player was arrested Monday morning after he busted through a window in the boarding area at the Tri-Cities Airport.
Michael Rayfield Hodges, 25, of California, managed to get onto the tarmac just as Horizon Air flight 2103 was getting ready to leave for Seattle.
The 6-foot, 270-pound lineman played parts of four seasons for the Fever, including eight games this year.
Hodges’ intentions were not clear, said Dwayne Baird, public affairs manager for the Transportation Security Administration.
Baird said Hodges showed up near the security screening area in the airport about 9 a.m. After he found the screening area was closed, he used the exit door to get inside a secured boarding area.
Hodges reportedly told security officers that he didn’t have a ticket and did not know anyone on that flight. He didn’t have a reason to be at the airport, Baird said.
When a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy asked him to leave, Hodges became angry, yelled obscenities, then broke through a window to get onto the tarmac where the loaded plane was preparing to leave.
It’s not clear if he was trying to board the plane.
A sheriff’s deputy shot Hodges with a Taser and then he was arrested. He was taken to Lourdes Medical Center for treatment before being booked into the Franklin County jail at 12:30 p.m. He is being held on suspicion of felony assault on a police officer.
Despite the breach, there was no danger to anyone at any time on the secure side of the airport, said Baird, who’s based in Salt Lake City. The TSA may bring civil charges, Baird said.
Hodges, who was a standout at Idaho State University, missed time last season with the Fever because of a knee injury.
“He was a guy that came across as real quiet, a real reserved guy,” said former Fever coach Dan Whitsett, who coached Hodges for two seasons. “He was a guy who always wore his emotions on his sleeve and always seemed to have a big heart.”
Hodges’ behavior is difficult to explain, Baird said, noting Hodges told the detectives that he doesn’t drink or use drugs.
Tri-Cities Airport Director Jim Morasch said the security breach was an unusual occurrence. “I’ve never seen anything like that before,” he said.
But he was satisfied with the way security agencies responded to the situation. “Everything worked the way it was supposed to,” Morasch said.
The incident delayed the Horizon flight by about a half-hour, said Dan Russo, Horizon’s vice president of marketing and communications.
Russo didn’t confirm or deny if Hodges was a passenger on the flight, citing company policies.

www.privateofficer.com Authorities at the Charlotte Douglas Airport said a flight was diverted to the airport when an unruly and intoxicated passenger had to be restrained on board and the pilots needed law enforcement assistance. Federal agents and the airport police department responded to meet the plane on the tarmac and take custody of the female.
Police said that the crew used duct tape to restrain the unruly passenger on a flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago.
The FBI said the woman slapped a crew member on the buttocks and pulled a blind passenger’s hair.
FBI Agent Peter Carricato said the passenger also used profanity and was touching and jabbing other passengers.
Authorities said 45-year-old Maria Esther Castillo of Oswego, N.Y., has been charged with resisting arrest and interfering with the operations of a flight crew.
The flight was diverted Saturday to Charlotte, and police say that Castillo fought with police officers who came aboard the plane. She now faces a detention hearing on Thursday.
