Man crashes into Goodwill store charged with assaulting security officers www.privateofficer.com
Roanoke VA July 11 2011 A Williamson Road thrift store reopened Saturday morning after a man smashed a car through its front doors late Friday night. No injuries were reported.
Kevin J. Baumgardner, 40, of Roanoke was charged with driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and two counts of assault and battery on security officers. He was later released on bond from the Roanoke County-Salem Jail.
The car plowed into the entrance of the Goodwill Industries of the Valleys store at the intersection of Williamson and Peters Creek roads about 10 p.m. Friday.
The driver left the car there and ran away, said Teresa Hamilton Hall, a county spokeswoman.
There was no one at the store because it was closed. Arriving officers chased after the driver and cuffed him in an adjacent parking lot, Hamilton Hall said.
Store managers swept up glass and debris, covered one of the store’s two sliding doors with plywood, and supported a broken corner of the foyer with wooden beams.
It was not immediately clear how long it would take to replace the door and part of the foyer, said Mark Brittain, the company’s vice president of donated goods.
He said the damage would cost “thousands of dollars,” though he was not certain how much.
In mid-May, an Ohio man driving a minivan crashed into the side of a Hardee’s restaurant on U.S. 220 in Troutville. Two patrons were hit but not severely injured.
Police said damage was estimated at $10,000.
