An Apache Junction man had an idea of making a little extra holiday income but it has landed him in jail.
Police say that the man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing 13 remote controls from six Target stores.
Peter Maassen, 52, was booked on suspicion of shoplifting and trafficking in stolen property. Target security investigators began an investigation of the thefts and notified police for assistance.
The security investigator told police Maassen entered six Target locations in Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Marana from Oct. 13 through Nov. 19 and cut open packages of Universal Remote Control Units, pocketed them and left the stores without paying. The remotes were valued at $2,399.
Security cameras captured several of the thefts, and all were witnessed by loss prevention officers at the stores, according to a police report.
Police arrested Maassen Thursday evening at his home. He told them he repaired remote controls and sold them on eBay. Police found 14 Logitech Harmony remotes listed for auction on his eBay account.
After serving a search warrant on his residence, police recovered 18 of the same type of remote controls.
Maassen was taken to the county detention center where he was being held pending a bond release.

Mesa police responded to a local department store after store security personnel caught six people Sunday stealing and some of them were store employees.
Police arrested several of them at the store but also said that they are looking for two others suspected of stealing merchandise from a retail store on multiple occasions.
According to reports, a 16-year-old Mervyn’s store employee assisted the suspects in the thefts by a scheme known in the retail industry as “slide-thru” or “under-ringing”.
Police say the subjects would bring numerous items to the register, some very high ticket items and the clerk would take between $15 and $25 for each transaction, and in one case, took no money at all.

A Mesa man free on bail and pending trial in connection with a previous Wal-Mart robbery was arrested Thursday on suspicion of robbing another store.
According to court documents, Marcos R. Jaramillo went into the store at 1955 S. Stapley Road in Mesa on Sept. 5, placed electronic items and liquor into a Wal-Mart bag and walked past the cash registers.
He knocked down a store security agent and stood over him in a threatening manner before leaving in a car, the documents state.
Jaramillo told a detective he used a “football swimming” technique to get past the security and knocked him down, but not intentionally.
Jaramillo was free on $8,100 bail for a July incident in which he was charged with aggravated assault, theft and robbery. He was released Aug. 22.
In that case, he pulled a knife and threatened employees of another Wal-Mart store as he tried to flee, according to court documents.
Some people got minor cuts when they tackled him.
