Bay Minette AL AUG 22 2009
Police arrested a Bay Minette Middle School teacher Friday morning after he appeared to be intoxicated and fell asleep during a
seventh-grade English class, authorities said.
Nicholas Taylor Pope, a 25-year-old special-education teacher and assistant football coach, was charged with public intoxication and illegal possession of prescription drugs.
It’s not clear what substance caused Pope’s intoxication, according to a police news release, but police found him in possession of suboxone, a drug commonly used to treat addiction to opiates.
Pope had a prescription for the drug.
According to Drugs.com, a Web site with information about prescription drugs, suboxone can cause drowsiness. The drug may also “dangerously increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol or antihistamines,” according to the site.
Police said Pope also had a plastic bag with an unknown green powdery substance and a plastic prescription bottle containing an unknown liquid. Both will be analyzed in a lab.
Chief Michael Rowland declined through a police dispatcher to elaborate beyond the information in the news release.
Terry C. Wilhite, a spokesman for the Baldwin County Public Schools system, said Pope was reported by another teacher after that teacher saw him fall asleep during a 9 a.m. English class.
Pope is a special education integration teacher, meaning he accompanies special-needs students into traditional classroom settings, Wilhite said. The English teacher was leading the class when he saw Pope’s “sleeping behavior,” Wilhite said.
Pope has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is the school system’s standard procedure, pending the results of the criminal investigation and a human resources department review. He was being held on $1,100 bail in the Baldwin County Corrections Center on Friday evening.
