Tennessee is 1 of 10 states that don’t issue firearms to state agents who supervise parolees and probationers. One of the reasons is that most personnel stayed in their office and saw the people they supervised and did little or no field work.
Now that is all about to change and the state is conducting a pilot study to see if that needs to change.
As of this week, the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole will begin introducing firearms to their staff according to spokeswoman Melissa McDonald.
Probation and parole officers in the Memphis and Jackson districts have already received law enforcement training and will begin going on rounds at the end of the month.
They will have different duties than regular probation and parole officers, including serving warrants and apprehending fugitives.
McDonald said those jobs are normally left to local law enforcement, where they may not be top priority.
