wsbtv.com — A former City of Austell employee is charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the municipal court, going back at least six years.
The mayor of Austell held a news conference Monday evening with the district attorney and released the information.
Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins said the money was found to be missing during a routine audit. Fees and fines paid to the court are usually logged in two places — one at the court, the other with deposits at city hall.
The employee, Patricia Regina Wilcurt, is accused of changing the amounts logged with the deposits to hide the thefts. Officials said the two records hadn’t been compared side-by-side before.

Jerkins said it was going on for years before an auditor caught it and they narrowed it down to one employee.
“We got her in and (we were) going to give her a polygraph and so she admitted to taking $2,000 one time and $2,000 another time. And then finally she went up to $20,000. But she wouldn’t admit to any more than that,” said Jerkins.
The mayor said Wilcurt, a mother of three, embezzled $121,000 that they know of.
District Attorney Pat Head said she is charged with theft by taking and making false statements, each of which could carry 10 years in prison.
The City of Austell has changed the way they take in fines.
