Retired NYPD officer commits suicide after shooting incident www.privateofficer.com

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. April 12 2009 — A retired New York City police officer shot an off-duty officer he suspected was having an affair with his police officer wife, then killed himself in the driveway of his suburban home, police said Saturday.
Cecil Ramsay, 51, shot himself in the head after firing at a car carrying his wife and a friend, both off-duty NYPD officers, Suffolk County police said.
He shot Officer Edwin Shittick in the hand after accusing him “of seeing his wife,” said Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.
“It’s our understanding that that is not the case. They’re just acquaintances,” Fitzpatrick said.
Ramsay fired at least three times at the car as his wife, Officer Belfort Dady, drove away with a wounded Shittick, Fitzpatrick said.
He then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger in front of several witnesses, Fitzpatrick said.
Dady, 46, and Ramsay have at least one child, Fitzpatrick said. Ramsay had been ill with heart problems and was awaiting a heart transplant, he said.
New York City police wouldn’t comment on the shootings or give information about the officers, referring all questions to Long Island authorities.

A Noblesville police officer’s shooting death in the driveway of a Henry County home Thursday will be ruled a suicide.
Henry County Sheriff’s Capt. Kim Cronk said Friday morning that Aaron Housman, 35, Westfield, a Noblesville policeman, was on duty Thursday when he drove to northern Henry County to talk to his girlfriend at her relative’s home at U.S. 36 and Messick Road.
Housman had been disciplined at work earlier in the day, and when he confronted his girllfriend, a Noblesville dispatcher, at about 5 p.m., he recorded audio of their meeting.
Cronk said police listened to that tape and used it to determine that Housman, a SWAT team sniper shooter, had shot himself in the head.
A police-issue gun was found near his body.
Housman, who was working undercover, was driving an unmarked police pickup truck and was wearing his police badge around his neck at the time of his death.
An autopsy is being conducted today, Cronk said.

Former Vegas Cop Commits Suicide www.privateofficer.com

A former police officer named as a potential target in an ongoing Homeowners Association corruption probe died Tuesday in an apparent suicide.
Retired Metro Police Lieutenant Chris Van Cleef died of what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation but it certainly looks like a suicide according to law enforcement sources.
Van Cleef spent years with Metro and retired as a Lieutenant in 2005 after getting nabbed in Utah for a DUI. His name and that of two other former Metro Officers, surfaced last week in the massive FBI-Metro investigation into alleged corruption within local homeowner association boards.
Agents served search warrants at several locations, seeking evidence to link local attorneys and contractors to HOA’s all over the valley.
One warrant was served at Platinum Communities, which is owned by the ex-wife of a current Metro Officer.
Lawmen think the outside interests conspired to take over the homeowner boards so that expensive repairs and lucrative construction defect lawsuits could be channeled to particular co-conspirators.
Van Cleef was elected to the board of the Pebble Creek Homeowner Association. Pebble Creek is one of the developments which is at the heart of the investigation.
No charges have been filed, but pressure is growing and sources close to the probe say the potential targets appear to be turning on each other.
There’s also an interesting twist elsewhere in the unfolding story — as federal agents and local police pursue leads against Las Vegas law firms and contractors, some of those very same potential targets are teaching courses for the state.
Attorney Nancy Quon, who specializes in construction defects lawsuits and whose name has been linked to several of the HOA’s now under suspicion, is signed up to teach classes to future homeowner association managers in a program authorized and promoted by the State of Nevada Real Estate Division.
The schedule shows Quan and her partners teaching courses in community management principles and in construction defects lawsuits. Also listed on the schedule is at least one contractor named in the search warrants served last week.
Whether those classes will continue as scheduled now that Quon and others have been served with warrants will be a decision for real estate officials to make.

A Detroit police sergeant suspected of arranging his wife’s killing was found dead by an apparent suicide in a suburban park.
Sgt. David Cobb, 38, who had been suspended without pay, hanged himself, police said. His body was found near a bike path in Dodge Park in Sterling Heights, The Detroit Free Press reported.
Cobb’s wife, Rose, 47, was gunned down Dec. 26 in the parking lot of a Detroit pharmacy while her husband was in the store. Vincent Smothers, 27, the alleged killer, told investigators after his arrest in April that Cobb had hired him.
Cobb was arrested briefly and then released for lack of evidence. Police sources told the Free Press there had been recent progress in the investigation.
Smothers said Cobb was angry because his wife had been cheating on him and he wanted money from her life insurance.

Chicago police officer shoots son, daughter, commits suicide http://www.privateofficer.com

Chicago DC Sept 16 2008
An off-duty Chicago police officer shot his young son and daughter, then committed suicide inside his home on the Southwest Side Monday morning, officials said.
The girl later died. The children were found with bullet wounds to their bodies inside the officer’s home in the 2700 block of West 43rd Street, about 10:45 a.m., police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.
The man was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head, she said. Officials have given varying ages of the children, but public records show the girl was 7 years old and the boy was 9.
The man and two children have not been identified by authorities. The children were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, and the girl was pronounced dead at 11:52 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She appeared to have been shot in the head, an office spokesman said
The man, who a police spokeswoman said was a 4-year veteran of the department who worked in the Englewood District, was pronounced dead at 12:22 p.m. at the scene.
He was described as in his late-20s.
First Deputy Supt. James Jackson said police believe the officer and his ex-wife had joint custody of the children and had been divorced for about three years. Authorities, however, were still trying to determine the exact nature of their relationship history. The mother was not at the home at the time of the shooting.
She later arrived at Mt. Sinai Hospital to be with her children, according to police.Neighbors called 911 after hearing the gunfire, police officials said. Jonathan Arenas, 26, who lives about two blocks west of the residence, said he was walking when he saw officers in full SWAT gear swarming the home.Arenas said he heard two gunshots and then heard a grenade go off and saw the as many as 30 officers swarm into the home.
Shortly after, he watched emergency officials bring the children out on a stretcher.

Police officer commits suicicde in police garage www.privateofficer.com

Police officer commits suicide at police garage http://www.privateofficer.com

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. Sept 3 2008(CBS.com) ― In a department of about 200 members, the death Monday of young rookie cop hit hard, especially since it was the second death for the small department so far this year.
Members of the Mount Vernon Police force began converging on their department’s headquarters late Labor Day afternoon after hearing of the gunshot death of a 23-year-old officer in a parking garage opposite the city’s main police building.
The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. and is being investigated as a probable suicide.
The young cop’s name is being initially withheld at the request of his family, who sources said, has deep roots in Westchester County’s law enforcement community. Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong confirmed the death and the ongoing investigation and said he was especially shaken by the news.
“This young officer had tremendous potential,” Chong told CBS 2 HD. “He was assigned to patrol. The medical examiner and the detective squad are looking into it, but right now we are not looking for suspects.
We believe this is an internal matter.” The small department was shaken to its core early this year when Officer Christopher Ridley was gunned down in neighboring White Plains trying to stop a beating.
In that incident, Westchester County Police officers responding to a call for help mistook Ridley for a criminal and shot him dead on the plaza directly in front of a county court building. Commissioner Chong said Ridley and the officer who died Monday knew each other.
Both were 23. “It’s a small department,” Chong explained. It is also tight knit. “This is a young police department,” Chong added. “The aggregate age is probably under 30 and this is the second officer we’ve lost this year. It really hits home.”
