Huntsville police said that an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop after the man failed to stop for Redstone Arsenal security but the driver fled.
Police reported that Justin Nicolow was spotted driving on the arsenal Wednesday morning when an officer attempted to pull him over. He refused, and the officer continued to follow him as he left arsenal property. Police said that the driver finally stopped off Zierdt Road.
“After he pulled over, his door fell open, and he fell out of the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest,” said Huntsville Police Sgt. Mark Roberts.
Officers called medics and he was rushed to Huntsville hospital and Roberts said the man’s injuries are “possibly life-threatening, but he is expected to survive.”
Right now police are investigating what Nicolow was doing on the arsenal property and why he attempted to commit suicide. There is no word right now whether he will face any criminal charges.
Nicolow is a former baseball coach at Discovery Middle School in Madison.

Chase into military base kills 1, injures 5 www.privateofficer.com

Chase into military base kills 1, injures 5 http://www.privateofficer.com

HUNTSVILLE AL June 5 2008 The Army said it would review security on Redstone Arsenal after a high-speed chase by civilian police ended in a crash that killed a NASA engineer and injured five more people.
Maj. Gen. Jim Myles, commanding general of the Army Aviation and Missile Command, said Monday an internal investigation would be conducted to determine details of Friday’s chase and wreck.
Local authorities pursued a drug suspect onto the facility, which is protected by guard posts and barricades.
The chase went about four miles across the post before ending in a crash that killed Darren Spurlock, 39, who worked at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
“Friday was a tragic day for the Redstone family,” Myles said. “Our hearts and condolences go out to the Spurlock family.”
Huntsville police identified the driver of the pursued vehicle as Valerie Cox, 35. Cox, who was among the five people hurt in the crash, threaded through concrete barriers to enter the post, authorities said.
The U.S. attorney’s office will be responsible for any charges because the post is federal property.
Myles said the Army wants to determine how much warning was given to gate guards of the pursuit, which involved members of an anti-drug task force.
But using firearms or other deadly force to stop the vehicle from coming on to the base was not an issue, Myles said. “That’s just not the way we operate. We are at a security level now that doesn’t allow for that,” he said. “That kind of activity doesn’t always safely stop a chase, either.” An alert was passed along to guards, who work for the private company Walden Security, but it had to be routed through a Redstone communication center because Huntsville police and Redstone use different radio systems, Myles said.
