Drake University officer assaulted during burglary www.privateofficer.com
Duaine Lee Field, 24, of 1415 Capitol Ave., was questioned by Drake Security Officer Tristan Johnson early today in the 1100 block of 24th Street after Johnson saw Field climbing out of a vehicle.
Johnson said he was about to call Des Moines police for help when Field “freaked out.” He said Field grabbed his belt with both hands and began removing his Mace. He sprayed it at the security officer, police said, but missed hitting him directly.
Police said Field fled on foot. Johnson called for back-up and followed the suspect on foot to 1146 22nd St.
Des Moines Police Officer Theodore Stroope said in his report that Field was found hiding in a Chevrolet Suburban in back of the residence. Officers reportedly ordered him out of the vehicle and he refused. They ordered him to show his hands and he refused.
Stroope said, “We knew suspect still may have Johnson’s Mace.”
Officers pulled him out of the van. One officer landed on top of Field and Field’s face hit the ground. Stroope and another officer held him to the ground by kneeling on his back.
Stroope said in the report: “During the affection of the arrest, suspect repeatedly screamed ‘police brutality.’ Once we stood him up he complained about us slamming his head. He told Officer (David) Blaess that all he had done was steal some speakers and he had taken the Drake officer’s Mace in self-defense.
Family Dollar security guard assaulted www.privateofficer.com
An 80-year-old Gary man working as a security guard at Family Dollar, 500 W. 5th Ave., was assaulted Monday night by a customer who fled with three cell phones.
Albert Fondren told police a man he knew as “C-Low” came into the store at 7:10 p.m. and announced a “stick up.”
The guard initially interpreted the threat as a joke, because he had seen the man in the store and spoken to him several times in recent weeks, Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
But then the man said, “I’m serious, I have a gun,” and struck Fondren in the face with a black, metal object.
The robber fled with three Trac phones worth about $20 each, King said.
Fondren was treated at The Methodist Hospitals in Gary for his injuries, the police report said.

Police say that Oakland resident Monisha Sparks could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon and a host of other charges, including forgery, when she is arraigned today at the Fremont Hall of Justice in connection with a Wednesday evening case at Lucky on Mowry Avenue.
Police said Sparks was at the grocery store about 5 p.m. when she tried to pass a forged travelers check, one supposedly drawn on the same account being investigated with a similar incident in recent weeks, said Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran.
When the cashier went to notify store security security agents, who ironically were in the middle of investigating the earlier forgery case — the woman ran out of the store and got into a red 2008 Toyota Corolla, Veteran said.
Security guards followed her. As they tried to coax the woman from her vehicle through her open driver’s door, Sparks put the car into reverse and the door hit the security guard, Veteran said, recounting what’s written in the police report.
The security officer was knocked to the ground and later was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
The woman then continued to ram a parked car nearby as she tried to flee before police arrived.
The store manager tried to grab the keys from the ignition, but gave up when the driver tried to bite him on the hand, Veteran said.
Another person eventually removed the keys before officers arrived and arrested the woman.
Police said another woman fled the scene before officers arrived. She is not being sought for any crimes, they said.

Colerain Township police say a woman caught stealing from the Macy’s store at Northgate Mall ran over a security officer who was trying to stop her as she tried to get away.
Andy Demeropolis, of the Colerain Township police, said that one of the two security guards trying to stop the woman was on a bicycle.
“She continued to back up, then his bike got caught under the tire of the vehicle and he started screaming at her, “Please stop,’” said Demeropolis.
Demeropolis says she did not – and ran over both of his legs.
A number of people in the parking lot witnessed what happened and took down her license plate number. Many called 911 on their cellphones and police and emergency rescue personnel were immediately dispatched.
Police used the information from witnesses to track her to Lincoln Heights where she allegedly went inside a house there.
According to police, she refused to exit the ehouse and was hold up and refused all police commands so police had the SUV towed.
They also say that Macy’s had surveillance video of the woman.
In the meantime, they will gather enough evidence so that a judge can issue a warrant for her arrest.
Demeropolis says instead of facing a shoplifting charge, she now faces a felony robbery charge and felonious assault on the security officer.

Andrew Joshua Velazquez, 19, of 109 Captivia Court, was charged with aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, petty theft and resisting recovery of merchandise by a retail merchant.
Velazquez would have been looking at a second-degree misdemeanor on the petty theft, but now additionally is facing a second-degree felony and a first-degree misdemeanor, said Sebring Police Lt. Bruce Crum on Friday.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, Velazquez reportedly was detained by Wal-Mart security for allegedly taking a pair of stereo headphones.
Police officer Chad Landry was called to the scene at about 6:42 p.m.
“Upon my arrival dispatch notified me loss-prevention officers were requesting immediate assistance, but could not advise why,” Landry wrote in his arrest report. “I proceeded to the loss-prevention office where I observed loss-prevention officer (name omitted by Highlands Today) holding down the suspect, identified later as Andrew Velazquez, in the doorway of the loss prevention office.”
Velazquez was lying on the floor on his back with the loss-prevention officer holding his hands against the ground. A large amount of blood was on the floor coming from the loss-prevention officer’s head.
The security officer turned Velazquez over and Landry handcuffed him.
When Highlands County Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived, they treated the security officer at the scene for a puncture to his right ear from the drill bit attached to the drill.
Velazquez didn’t complain of any injury, but was covered in the security officer’s blood, Landry noted.
The security officer alleged he saw Landry place a pair of iPod headphones valued at $30.90 in his right-front pants pocket. He walked around the store a while, then headed for the exit, the report stated.
The officer said he stopped Velazquez outside the store and walked him to the security office. Velazquez began to complain about stomach pain, but had been cooperative, so he allowed him to stand up, the report stated.
Out of the corner of his eye, the officer said he saw Velazquez swing something toward him, and turned his head to avoid the blow. It was then he tried to get away, but the officer grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him to the ground.
The drill had been left in the office and belonged to one of the workers doing remodeling inside the store, the report stated. The battery incident was captured on video cameras inside the office, the report stated.
