PRIVATE OFFICER MEMORIAL WEEK 2010
SEPTEMBER 19-25 2010
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
There are a number of ways for you to be involved in the 2nd Annual Private Officer Memorial week.
First, you can help to get the word out to your co-workers and other security personnel in your area. Make them aware of this very
important and special week.
Second, you can send a letter of announcement to your media, and local officials including your mayor and state governor and ask that
a Proclamation for Private Officer Memorial week be issued.
(We will provide you with the letter and all materials.)
Third, you can hold a small memorial at your office or place of business or a local park during that week. It does not have to be a large
production. A few minutes reading the names of security officers killed from your states, a minute of silence or a prayer is all that is
necessary.
(We will supply the names of deceased officers from your state)
Forth, if you are a uniformed officer, you may also wear a black band over your badge.
We also welcome any further suggestions that you might have for this event.
Security officer killed in Washington crash www.privateofficer.com
Trooper Dan McDonald said said the truck was on the shoulder of the highway just north of 15th Street NW when it was hit by the car about 4:30 a.m.
The driver of the car died at the scene. He was identified by the State Patrol as 29-year-old Kin Beliakoff.
We have learned that Beliakoff was an on duty security officer working for Washington Merchant Patrol LLC at the time of the wreck.
Police say that he truck driver was not hurt.
McDonald said troopers are also trying to determine why the truck was parked on the side of the highway.
Bank of America security officer shot dead www.privateofficer.com
A 38-year-old Bank of America security guard was fatally shot early today outside the bank’s main downtown Baltimore headquarters on Light Street after he tried to intervene in a dispute shortly after nightclubs closed, according to a city police spokesman.
The victim, who was not immediately identified, was working for the bank at 10 Light St. just north of the Inner Harbor when the attack occurred about 2:07 a.m. The guard was pronounced dead this morning at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the guard was talking to a man outside the bank when a car pulled up to the curb. The spokesman said occupants argued with the man talking with the guard. “Words were exchanged and the security guard tried to intervene,” Guglielmi said. “He was shot after that.”
Police said they are questioning the man the guard had been talking with, and it was unclear this morning whether the guard knew that man or just happened to be chatting with a passerby. Police also said they do not know what the men were arguing about.
But Guglielmi said, “We are ruling out that this was a robbery.” It was not immediately clear whether the guard was armed.
Police said the attackers had just left a nightclub. The shooting occurred just minutes after bars closed, and streets downtown and in adjacent neighborhoods tend to fill with rowdy patrons headed home or elsewhere.
Last year, the downtown area was hit with a rash of shootings and other violence, some linked to gangs and directed at patrons, that forced police to redirect patrols to the harbor and to areas north in Mount Vernon and Mid-Town Belvedere.
Security officer dies detaining shoplifter www.privateofficer.com
The 46-year-old man died following a scuffle with a theft suspect at about 9 a.m., police said.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of third-degree assault and second-degree theft. He is in custody but is being treated at a hospital for injuries suffered during the scuffle, police said.
The incident started when the security guard recognized the suspect in connection with a theft from the Galleria on Wednesday, police said. The security guard detained the suspect but a scuffle ensued, police said.
The security guard was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police have classified the case as an unattended death pending the results of an autopsy.

K-Mart Loss Prevention Agent Killed By Shoplifter www.privateofficer.com
The incident happened about 2 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of a Kmart at 3541 Highland Road, according to township police Sgt. Scott Good. Police had received a call from a loss prevention officer at the store concerned that a man was about to steal items. A few minutes later, three 911 calls were made to police about a pedestrian accident in the parking lot.
The 36-year-old loss prevention officer was found lying face down in the lot in front of the building and was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to a police press release.
Witnesses told police the victim had chased after a man who left the store and jumped into a 1994 GMC Jimmy parked outside the front door and driven by the woman. The victim somehow became entangled in the door or window of the vehicle, which began to drive off. Police said the victim was dragged several hundred feet before falling to the pavement.
Witnesses followed the fleeing vehicle to a Pontiac address and notified police. Pontiac and township police arrested the pair without incident and also recovered stolen property, police said.

Security officer killed in crash www.privateofficer.com
Michael E. Owens, 35, of the 3600 block of South Compton Avenue, died this morning after being struck by a driver heading west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.
Police said the two vehicles collided about 12:30 a.m. A man, 43, was driving a 2009 Nissan Murano that crashed head-on into a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by Owens near O’Fallon Park.
Police withheld the name of the driver heading the wrong direction. He was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Owens died at the crash scene.
A police spokeswoman said investigators are working to determine whether alcohol factored into the crash and are awaiting results of toxicology tests, which could take weeks.
Owens was a security guard for Whelan Security and lived with his wife, Jessie Stueck-Owens, 29, and two roommates in St. Louis. He and his wife had been married about five years and had no children.
His wife declined an interview request.
A sister, Kari Owens, 33, of Belleville, said he was the second youngest of seven siblings. She said he was a smart and talented artist and a “great guy” who loved his family.
“He was so against drinking and driving.” Kari Owens said, crying. “He was one of the good ones. It shouldn’t have happened.”
One of his roommates, Erin DeMoulin, said Owens grew up in Belleville and had been active in an improvisational theater group in St. Louis for more than a decade.
DeMoulin said Owens was driving home from work when he crashed. She described him as a generous person, a hard worker and “practical jokester” who had a passion for playing games.
“He always had a smile,” she said. “He’d pretty much do anything for his friends.”
Oakland security officer shot-killed www.privateofficer.com
Police are also investigating the death of another man who was either thrown from a vehicle or hit by one.
Bounhom Manyvong, of Oakland, was shot about 7 p.m. Saturday at the AutoZone store, 10111 International Blvd., where he had worked for at least six years.
He worked for a security company that has a contract with the store, police said.
Sgt. Caesar Basa said today Manyvong was inside the store when he was confronted by at least two suspects and shot. He died at 8:08 p.m. Saturday at Highland Hospital.
Basa said police are not sure if the suspects were there to rob the store or for another reason.
Store employees were present but no one else was hurt.
Basa said a relative of Manyvong’s told police he was not supposed to be working at the store Saturday night but was called in when the scheduled guard was not able to for some reason.
Basa said police were told Manyvong has three children, including a son in the Air Force.
The killing was the city’s 106th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 118 homicides in Oakland.
Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the death Saturday afternoon of a 60-year-old Oakland man who was possibly hit by a car or thrown from the vehicle.
He was identified as James M. Brown of Oakland.
Brown, who police said was disabled because of various illnesses, was found suffering massive trauma about 1:27 p.m. Saturday in the street at the intersection of West MacArthur Boulevard and Telegraph Avenue.
He was taken to Highland Hospital where he died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
Sgt. John Parkinson said today that shortly before Brown was found he was summoned by a tenant to an apartment complex in the 500 block of Oakland Avenue that his brother manages. His brother was not there which was why Brown was called. The tenant said there was some kind of dispute at an apartment in the complex, Parkinson said.

Bloody week-end leaves 2 security officers dead, 4 others injured www.privateofficer.com
By: Rick McCann
PRIVATE OFFICER NEWS NETWORK
http://www.privateofficer.com/
A deadly week-end for private security officers has left two officers dead, one other shot and two more with stab wounds.
While all of the incidents occurred at different businesses and in different states, they all had the same underlying tones to the attacks; disregard for human life and senseless violence.
In the first reported incident, a security officer who stopped to question a suspicious trespasser at an apartment complex in Bridgeport CT. was stabbed repeatedly and left for dead. The officer is listed in serious condition.
At about the same time Friday, another security officer patrolling the parking lot of a grocery store in Dayton Ohio was shot and killed. Police say that 41 year old Orlyn Charlie Conklin died after a possible confrontation with unknown suspects.
In Chattanooga TN Friday, a security officer on foot patrol of a city property said a vehicle with several males drove up and began firing at him. Robert Underwood was shot and is listed in good condition. Police say there is no motive in this shooting.
On Saturday, Oakland California police were called to a deadly shooting at an Auto Zone store near the intersection of 101st Avenue and International Boulevard.
Police say two men entered the store just after 7:00 p.m and began arguing with a store security guard.
Moments later, the men pulled out a gun and shot the guard three times. Before fleeing from the scene, the men stole the security guards gun.
The guard was transported from the scene by ambulance to Eden hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.
A representative from St. Moritz Security Services, Inc. says the victim was a man in is 50′s who had been working for the company for the past couple of years.
A loss prevention agent employed by Kohl’s attempted to stop a shoplifter and as he was walking the man back into the store, police say that the suspect pulled a knife and began stabbing the security officer without provocation. As the man fled, the security officer fell to the ground in serious condition.
The loss prevention agent is expected to survive his wounds police say.
A female security officer on duty at a Rockford IL. school tried to break up a fight and was assaulted by numerous students police say. The officer received broken teeth, bruises on her face and other injuries and was transported to an area hospital in good condition. The suspects have been arrested.
More than twenty other assaults on private security officers have been reported so far this week-end and a total tally should be available next week.
Nightclub security officer stabbed to death www.privateofficer.com
A security person who tossed troublemakers from a popular Washington Heights hangout was stabbed to death early Tuesday, police said.
Arsene Epouta was knifed in the chest after jumping in the middle of a fight at La Casa del Mofongo. “Our security guard tried to break up the fight,” said Franklin Cruz, the restaurant manager.
Epouta cleared the 24-hour Dominican restaurant of the brawlers just after 3:30 a.m.
“He ejected some people from that location,” said a police source.
The fight spilled onto St. Nicholas Ave. near W. 183rd St., and that’s when someone repeatedly stabbed Epouta, who died at New-York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia.
“This never happens here,” Cruz said of the restaurant, which attracts cops and Dominican politician and athletes.
“We feel sorry for the family of the worker.”
Police were looking at surveillance video from the restaurant’s cameras. Three people were being interrogated at the 34th Precinct stationhouse, but no arrests had been made.

PRESS RELEASE-PRIVATE OFFICER MEMORIAL WEEK
Year after year, private security officers employed worldwide are killed while protecting life and property and in most cases receive little or no recognition, honors or respect.
This situation occurs because there has not been any centralized organization to step forward to thank these fallen heros and to be there as a support for the family that they have left behind.
But in the past several years all of that has changed with the inception of the Memorial Aid Fund sponsored and administered by
PRIVATE OFFICER INTERNATIONAL.
We also realized that there has never been any official week or dedicated time period to remember these men and woman who bravely, valiantly and willingly sacrificed their life to fulfill their duties to their client, their employer and to the public safety of the area that they were responsible for.
Therefore, a committee was formed to aid in the research and designation of a specific date in time when we as professionals in our field along with the rest of the law enforcement and security community, families, friends and the general public could pay homage and respect and gratitude to more than 300 Private Officers who have been killed in the past four years and the many others who died before that in service to those that they were hired to protect, serve, and guard against all criminal activity or other harm that would otherwise come against their
employer’s property, employees, visitors and the general public.
PRIVATEOFFICER INTERNATIONAL has worked diligently for almost a year to seek input from security agencies and organizations and professional associations to select a week each year when we could memorialize our fallen colleagues and we are extremely pleased to announce that we have determined a special time for us to do this each year beginning with 2009.
Each year, the third week in the month of September shall be recognized as the “Official”
“Private Officer Memorial Week”.
During this week each year, there will be many planned activities and they will be announced in advance of
the memorial week each year.

The shooting happened at 280 East 161st Street in the Concourse Village section.
Brian McCray was working the overnight hours at the apartment building. The 35-year-old was gunned down on the job at 3:30 a.m. He moved to the Bronx only six months ago.
Police have made no arrests have no motive. His family is left with anger and tears.
He was a lovely young man,” aunt Blanch Donovan said. “And just to know that this could actually happen overnight. And to wake up this Sunday to hear news like that, it’s really a shocking surprise to me.”
McCray’s relatives drove up from Delaware to identify the body. They say he has a wife and a 4-year-old son in South Carolina. He was unable to find work there, and came to New York. His son has not yet been told of his death.
“Brian was a hard worker,” aunt Kimberly Miller said. “He always tried to do the right thing. He worked a lot, trying to support his son. That’s why he’s here.”

A 31-year-old Newark security officer was shot multiple times as he left work and was found shot to death Friday morning on a 4th Avenue sidewalk, police said.
Julio Cotto, an unarmed security guard who was off-duty at the time of the incident, was shot multiple times in the head and body as he was walking home from work, said Newark police detective Todd McClendon.
Police said Cotto was employed by Gateway Security and was walking home in his uniform from the bus when the incident occurred.
Police found Cotto’s body outside 97 4th Ave. around 12:30 a.m., McClendon said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
The shooting initially appeared to be an armed robbery attempt because it happened in an area that is not associated with drug activity and because Cotto does not have a criminal background, McClendon said.
After the autopsy showed several gunshot wounds, police said it appears more likely that the victim was targeted.
However, McClendon said they have not drawn any final conclusions and will explore many possibilities during the joint investigation by Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call the department’s 24 hour “Crime Stoppers” anonymous tip line at (877) 695-8477 .

Report on 2008 Security Officer Deaths Released www.privateofficer.com
Report on 2008 Security Officer Deaths Released http://www.privateofficer.com
by: Toni Anthony
Special Assignment Editor
Private Officer.com
EXCLUSIVEThe National Association of Private Officers today released their year end report of security officer deaths for 2008.
According to Rick McCann, Executive Director, the N.A.P.O. identified and confirmed 53 on duty deaths of security officers but estimates that the number is actually closer to 70.
The discrepancy always comes from the way that security officer positions are classified by numerous federal agencies. While their job title may be doorman or watchman or pool guard, they all perform security related duties but are not categorized as security officers on federal statistical records, the N.A.P.O. said.
A practice the McCann hopes will change soon so that those who die while in the performance of their security duties are properly recognized, he said.
The 2008 death total is down by 15% from the previous year and McCann attributes that to the continued heightened training that many security companies now participate in, general awareness of their duties, surroundings and job scope and a much more professional security officer who is better educated and skilled at their duties.
However, injuries of private security officers substantially rose during this same period with a major jump in the life threatening area such as gunshots, stab wounds and trauma and McCann said that this increase is due in part to the more visible, proactive security positions and duties of the private officer. “Many more security officers are involved in apprehensions and arrests of shoplifters, trespassers, robbery suspects and others who are committing crimes on properties under guard and security officers are playing a much bigger part in going after these people and being proactive in their duties.
There is also a much wider use of private security in retail, residential, special events and other areas where there is more contact with the public, including criminals which makes the security officer more vulnerable to attack, assault and death.”
As security officer duties and scope of authority continues to increase and the profession takes on a more proactive rather than reactive response, injuries and unfortunately deaths of security officers will also steadily increase McCann said.
That’s why we are pushing for increased security officer training standards and qualifications so that these private officers will be better prepared and equipped to handle the added responsibilities and better safeguard themselves during the performance of them, McCann added.

The shooting happened Friday night just before 11:30 at Club 310 on Johnson Street across the street from The Dow Event Center. The victim was providing security at the club and police say he wasn’t the intended target.
The incident started as a fight inside the club and then moved into the front lobby, turning into a gun fight that killed the 41-year-old security guard.
It’s unclear what the fight was about or how many people were involved. Two other people were shot, but their injuries were not serious.
The owners of the club could not be reached for comment, but Club 310 is rented out for various events. The security guard did not work for the club, but was hired specifically for the night’s event.
Police are not saying whether they have any suspects in custody.
Club 310 tonight was open for business on Saturday.
PrivateOfficer.com continues to monitor this developing story and will release the security officer’s name as soon as we become aware of it.

Security officer injuries and deaths study released www.privateofficer.com
Security officer injuries and deaths study released http://www.privateofficer.com
By: Toni Anthony
Special Assignment
EXCLUSIVE A two year study of security officer deaths and injuries by the National Association of Private Officers was released on Tuesday, December 16 2008.
In the study, the association monitored all on the job injuries and deaths of employees who fell within the classification of security officer for twenty four months.
The N.A.P.O. a professional organization of private security and law enforcement personnel based in Atlanta Georgia looked at and collected statistical data on loss prevention agents, guards, public safety officers, bouncers, uniform security officers, patrol officers, private police officers, and others who performed security related duties but whose jobs classified them as positions other than security officers.
During the study, 169 security officers were confirmed to have died in the line of duty and the N.A.P.O. estimates that actual death totals were in the 220 range or higher. Discrepancies and poor data collection and classification by state and federal agencies continue to keep the true and accurate death totals in the dark said Executive Director Rick McCann. McCann said that throughout the study, the N.A.P.O. staff diligently worked to research many databases and resources to verify as much of the collected data as possible as they researched the various information for this study.
During the same time, the National Association of Private Officers, in conjunction with Talley Research Consultants, also researched and collected data on injuries sustained by private security officers. During the two year study, more than 41,000 injuries were sustained by security employees. Although the majority was minor according to the study, approximately 12% were serious in nature and characterized as life threatening including gunshot and stab wounds, trauma from assaults or on the job traffic accidents, industrial injuries, and miscellaneous injuries.
Mr. McCann stated that the study also showed that of all of the job categories for security personnel, the position of a retail security agent or loss prevention officer was the one where most personnel in these positions experienced the majority of bodily harm from assaults and constant threat of physical attacks and frequent confrontations occurring.
According to data recently released by the National Retailers Association, retail security officers collectively apprehended more than 700,000 shoplifters in 2007 and many are repeat offenders, professionals and convicted criminals who do not want to chance being sent to prison so they’d rather fight than to be caught McCann said. “Because of this and the economic crises and the frequent contact with someone who has committed a crime, loss prevention personnel will continue to see these types of increases in assaults and even serious injury to themselves.”
The two deadliest security positions based on recorded on the job deaths during the two year study was nightclub or bar security with 15 deaths and that of an armored car security officer which saw 7 deaths during this time. Retail security recorded 4 loss prevention officers killed while apprehending shoplifters.
While many professions face certain dangers and life threatening on the job situations, the private security industry’s risks are definitely growing in defined areas of the security industry almost unnoticed to many who study employee injuries or deaths according to the study.
Private security personnel are increasingly facing aggressive and violent attacks by both the armed and unarmed criminals as security officer duties are frequently crossing the lines between the standard observe and report and the more frequent proactiveness and responsiveness of security forces Mr. McCann said.
More clients of private security agencies and proprietary security departments are requiring that security officers do more than just report incidents. Many require that their officers respond to the situation whatever it might be and take the necessary steps to see the incident through including the apprehension or arrest of criminal law or civil violators.
Mr. McCann went on to say that other studies done by the N.A.P.O. showed that over the past ten years, private security officers have been responsible for the apprehension or arrests of hundreds of thousands and even millions of offenders responsible for both minor and serious criminal acts.
With these new boundaries, duties, obligations and responsibilities, private officers are facing far more danger than in times past and this danger will continue to escalate as the job descriptions of private security personnel continue to expand and diversify. With those new duties and the increased numbers of security personnel being hired not only nationally but world wide, injuries and deaths of these employees will increase and it doesn’t look like it will level off anytime soon.
The best defense for the security industry is a good offense McCann said.
“Security needs to do a better job at training and preparing its employees regardless of the high turnover rates that this business experiences, costs involved or any other factor. We owe that employee this much. How can we feel good about putting a 70 year old security person on duty in an area or situation that could be potentially dangerous knowing that he or she is almost defenseless? Or assign a 20 year old to a high crime apartment complex, patrol beat, shopping mall or other high risk area without proper equipment, communications, and most of all complete training.”
The study clearly pointed out that the risks of injuries and deaths in the security industry are rising and many deaths could be attributed to much of what the association director passionately spoke of.

Man found guilty in security officer murder http://www.privateofficer.com
vvdailypress.com A man was convicted of second-degree murder Tuesday for the shooting death of a security guard at the now-defunct Club Oasis.
Charles Bell, 21, was convicted of the June 2006 drive-by shooting of Maurice McCullough at the Victorville nightclub after McCullough told Bell and another man they could not take their drinks on the dance floor, according to officials.
Bell, who had been free on $1 million bail, was taken into custody as soon as the verdict was handed down.
McCullough’s family was present when the verdict was read and his mother made it a point to be in the courtroom every day of the trial.
“I care about the case whether there is family present or not, but it tends to touch your heart when you see the people impacted by a person’s murder,” Deputy District Attorney Robert Brown said in an interview. “It encourages you to do whatever you can to seek some sort of justice.”
Meldanado Hankins is also being prosecuted for McCullough’s murder in a separate case, Brown said.
Bell was arrested in July 2006 in Las Vegas after the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s High Desert Gang Enforcement team issued a nationwide warning to police agencies.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police authorities stopped Bell while he was driving the same Cadillac El Dorado used in the shooting, officials said.Bell now faces 40 years to life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 30.

Family of security officer gunned down still seeks answers http://www.privateofficer.com
On this day, when we give thanks for the people we love, it’s impossible to know how long their lives will last.
For Sherita Washington and her husband, it was not very long.
Last year, on the day after Thanksgiving, a gunman killed her husband, Bobby, for seemingly no reason.
This year, his widow says there is still plenty to be grateful for.
The murder took place downtown where Bobby Washington was working as the doorman for a party in a penthouse.
The timing sent shock waves throughout the entire community.
But the community response is what they are grateful for.
Like any family, Sherita Washington and her sister want Thanksgiving dinner to be perfect.
But as she gets ready for this Thanksgiving, Sherita can’t help but remember the last one, the last she spent with her husband of eight years.
“My husband, he just wanted to do dinner at home, with just the family, just me and the children,” she said.
The very next day, less than two hours after starting a security job in downtown Dallas, Bobby Washington was dead, shot down by a stranger whose motive remains unknown.
The murder left Sherita raising four children alone, a Thanksgiving tragedy so profound, that when News 8 viewers saw the family facing a bleak Christmas, they got so many gifts, they ended up giving some away.
“I was able to help out a family that didn’t have anything. She had four kids of her own,” said Sherita.
A year later, these kids all say they remember their dad.
But at this age, they don’t really understand death.
“They say ‘call him’… that’s the hardest for me and I go take a shower. I take care of my tears in the shower, so they won’t see me. I try to be strong for them a lot,” said Sherita.
With support from family and new-found friends, she’s trying to move on, thankful for the man she had, and the lives still left to live.
“I look at it as God just sent an angel down eight and a half years to give me four children and damn, he’s gone,” Sherita added.
But in these five faces, his love, and his legacy live on.

School security officer found murdered http://www.privateofficer.com
A 45-year old security guard assigned to Marianas High School was found dead on campus early yesterday morning, prompting school authorities to cancel the classes for the day.
The victim, Efren Ballesteros, had been working for Global Security Agency for the past three years.
Department of Public Safety’s acting spokesman PO2 Jason T. Tarkong said in an interview that DPS Central received a call from the school about a dead person at 6:13 a.m. yesterday.
“Investigators who responded to the scene discovered Ballesteros’ bloodied body lying along the covered walkway right in front of the school building,” Tarkong said.
The victim had no pulse when police officers arrived.
According to Tarkong, the victim suffered several body injuries and blunt trauma, which could have caused his death.
Tarkong said investigators are looking at two possibly related crimes — homicide and burglary.
He said some of the classrooms on the second floor of a school building was burglarized although they had yet to check what items were lost.
“The two crimes could be related but investigation is still going on,” Tarkong said.
Investigators scrutinized the crime scene and the school’s perimeter fence for possible points of entry or traces that the perpetrators could have left behind.
Tarkong said classes at MHS will resume once investigators “clear” the area.
“We don’t want anybody to mess up with the investigation and destroy any evidence. This means classes at the school will be suspended until further notice,” he said.
Tarkong said the incident could have happened at dawn before the victim could finish his shift.
He said he had been with DPS for the past 17 years but this was the first time that an incident of this kind happened at MHS.
Lumi Bermudes, vice principal for administration and student services, said the victim was assigned to guard the school premises from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
He would usually turned the lights off at 5:45 a.m. and unlock the gate.
“When a school staffer arrived, he was surprised because the gates were still locked and the lights were on, which was kind of unusual. When he came in, he saw the victim’s body,” Bermudez said.
She added that they barred the students from entering the school premises.
“We don’t want the students to enter the crime scene because we don’t want to jeopardize the investigation,” she said.
Their priority now, she added, is to ensure that their 1,300 students can return to their classes as soon as possible.
She said they will do their best to bring things back to normal as soon as possible.
Bermudez said the victim was one of the school’s new guards.
“I’ve seen him for about three to four months. He was a nice person, dedicated to his job and very positive,” she said.
“This is a very shocking incident for all of us, and we want the perpetrators to be caught as soon as possible,” she said.
Adelaida Abella, the victim’s wife, said she and her husband were supposed to go to church at 10 a.m. to have their five-month-old son’s christening scheduled.
She said when he didn’t show up, she called her husband’s employer and that’s when she learned what happened.
Abella said as of yesterday morning, her other son, a 12-year-old studying at Hopwood, was not yet aware that his father was dead.
She and her husband had been staying on Saipan since 1992, and she didn’t expect “something as tragic as this will happen to us.”
According to Frank Elecho, another Global Security Agency guard, the victim was a quiet man and didn’t quarrel with anyone.
“I’m still shocked this happened,” he said.
GSA supervisor Danny Punzalan said that they are already making arrangements with the insurance company to process the death benefits of the victim.
Police are urging members of the public with any information about this crime to call DPS at 664-9002 or the Crime Stoppers at 234-7272.

Hilton Head SC NOV 17 2008
Jury selection in the case of a man charged with killing a Hilton Head Island security guard in an alleged drunken-driving wreck last year is set to begin this afternoon at the Beaufort County Courthouse.
Rodney L. Galimore, 40, of Bluffton is charged with reckless homicide, felony DUI, a fourth offense of driving with a suspended license, two counts of child endangerment for having his young children in the vehicle, a liquor violation and not having insurance.
If convicted of all charges, he faces up to 65 years in prison and more than $56,200 in fines.
Merry C. Deon, 42, was riding her motorcycle home from work on S.C. 46 in Pritchardville on Aug. 11, 2007, when Galimore allegedly drove his SUV out of a parking lot directly in front of her.
Deon, who maintained an address in Ridgeland but was staying with a friend in Savannah, was a full-time security guard at Long Cove Club. She worked a second part-time job at Lowe’s in Bluffton.
She previously worked security at Hilton Head Plantation and Palmetto Dunes.
Her family described her as a friendly, compassionate woman who took in stray cats. After the wreck, other Long Cove Club security officers wore black bands around their badges, and flags were lowered to half-staff.
Galimore has been held in the county jail on a $226,798 bond since the wreck.
Galimore surrendered his South Carolina driver’s license in 2005. His SUV had New York tags, and he carried a New York license at the time of the wreck. He has a previous drunken-driving conviction for crashing into a fence along U.S. 278 and three convictions for driving with a suspended license.

State troopers say that a security guard riding in the vehicle died at the scene, and the drivers of both rigs were taken to area hospitals.
“It’s shiny across the roadway,” said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kim Miller. “There are nickels in the grass, across the interstate.”
Approximated $187,000 worth of nickels that were strewn across southbound I-95, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 in east-central Florida.
Officers were detouring traffic off County Road 5A to U.S. Highway 1 to state Road 46.
The highway patrol has not yet identified the security officer who died in the wreck as the investigation is still underway and next of kin is yet to be notified.

Security officer killed during robbery of game room www.privateofficer.com
Security officer killed during robbery of game room http://www.privateofficer.com
Two men robbed the game room in the Arkansas Court shopping center on Arkansas Lane near Texas 360.
Police did not release a description of the shooters but asked the public to help identify two persons of interest who were captured on video surveillance earlier that morning.
A game room security guard who arrived for his shift Sunday morning said he planned to quit after learning about the shooting.
“My wife never liked the idea of me being here. It’s a very dangerous job. You come across some strange people,” said the guard, who asked not to be identified because of concerns for his safety.
The Bida L.A. game room, located on the north side of Arkansas Lane near Le’s Fire Pot, is one of the 14 last known game rooms in Arlington, and the city had yet to inspect it, said Jim Parajon, the city’s community and planning development director.
The city has been working since August 2007 to close down illegally operating game rooms through code inspections and undercover investigations, which target players winning large amounts of cash from the electronic casinolike games. Eight-liners are legal in Texas, but winners can’t receive cash or prizes worth more than $5. Game rooms also violate the city’s zoning laws, which allow businesses to offer games of skill, like pool and darts, but not games of chance.
As of Sunday, officials said 57 of the 71 identified game rooms in the city had either been closed voluntarily or by force.
Like many other game rooms in the city, the Bida L.A. has mirrored glass windows that prevent people from looking inside and a security camera pointing at the entrance to screen those who try to enter. Signs on the door advise that guests must be over 18, must show a valid identification and are not allowed to bring firearms inside.
Bida means billiard in Vietnamese.
A phone number was not listed for the business, which was closed Sunday during the police investigation.
Arlington police began undercover investigations at game rooms in February. By July, police said they had seized more than 600 eight-liner machines, arrested 15 game room employees on suspicion of promotion of gambling and written tickets to 109 players who officers found were gambling.
The Bida L.A. would be forced to close if city staff found evidence of illegal gambling, Parajon said.

Police charge man with murder of security officer www.privateofficer.com
Police charge man with murder of security officer http://www.privateofficer.com
Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged a man in connection with a bungled bank robbery in Kansas City two years ago that left a 70-year-old security guard dead.
Kansas City police and FBI agents arrested Iralee French, 21, in St. Louis on Wednesday. They interviewed him until midnight.
Court records accuse him of being the man who shot Dwight W. Mayhugh on Feb. 24, 2006, as the guard arrived for work at UMB Bank, 7901 Wornall Road. Mayhugh died in a hospital the next day.
Authorities tracked down a second suspect this week in a St. Louis jail, where he is awaiting trial on an unrelated armed robbery. That 21-year-old man has not been charged in Mayhugh’s death.
Information generated from the largest-ever canvass in a criminal case two weeks ago helped authorities identify French and the second suspect. But authorities needed more evidence before making arrests.
Investigators spent recent days following leads, conducting interviews and requesting subpoenas before interviewing the suspects Wednesday and Thursday, police said.
Court records gave this account:
French and his partner scouted out the bank on Feb. 23, 2006.
The next morning, French called a taxi cab to pick them up at his partner’s girlfriend’s house near 23rd Street and Oakley Avenue and take them to the area of the UMB Bank.
The partner waited across the street from the bank. French wore black clothes and hid near the bank’s underground parking garage with a shotgun waiting for bank tellers to arrive.
Instead, about 6:40 a.m., Mayhugh pulled in and parked. French and his partner approached Mayhugh’s car, and Mayhugh reached for his gun.
French allegedly “panicked” when he saw Mayhugh’s gun and blasted the guard through the car window. Shotgun pellets hit Mayhugh’s neck and chest.
The robbers took Mayhugh’s keys and dragged him to the doorway because they wanted him to open the safes.
Once inside, Mayhugh tried to turn off the alarm but could not.
The robbers put Mayhugh in a corner, hopped in his car and fled with no money. Mayhugh walked across the street to summon help.
Authorities later found Mayhugh’s car abandoned in the 2300 block of Oakley Avenue. It was only a half-block from where a bank teller’s car had been dumped after a robbery at the same bank two weeks before.
Authorities said at the time that the robberies were connected, but no charges have been filed in connection with the first one, which occurred Feb. 9, 2006. In that case, two gunmen confronted a teller, stole her teller drawer and ordered her into the trunk of her car. She refused, and they fled in her car.
Shortly after Mayhugh’s death, FBI agents canvassed a small area on the block where both cars were abandoned. At a house near 23rd Steet and Oakley, they interviewed a young man who now is identified as the second suspect.
He was not a suspect at the time, police said. He told agents he was asleep at the time of the crime.
French and the second suspect were staying at the suspect’s girlfriend’s home on 23rd Street in early 2006, according to court records.
The records said the suspect changed his pants before talking to FBI agents when they came door-to-door.
French and the suspect later left the house but returned later that day to retrieve their clothing and a long gun, the records said.
In the years after the crime, leads dried up and the reward fund for information in the case grew to $60,000.
The FBI agent in charge of the case eventually was assigned to the Kansas City Police Department’s Career Criminal squad, and the squad took over the investigation.
Earlier this year, a tipster called the TIPS Hotline with details that filled two pages regarding Mayhugh’s death. Members of the Career Criminal squad thought the tipster lived in the neighborhood where the cars were dumped or had connections to that neighborhood.
That’s why they decided to send more than 100 investigators to a large area near 24th and Oakley to knock on nearly 500 doors in search of fresh tips.
The publicity surrounding the canvass led someone outside of the neighborhood to contact authorities.
“We got a huge break,” said Sgt. Eric Greenwell of the Career Criminal squad.
Federal prosecutors said it was premature to discuss how the $60,000 reward would be distributed.

An officer found Robin Lacy, 50, unresponsive on a sidewalk leading up to the Cosmo Knights lounge in the 3300 block of North Illinois Street about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. He apparently had been struck by a vehicle or vehicle debris while on duty at the Near-Northside lounge
Lacy was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival, according to a written release from Lt. Jeff Duhamell, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
A sport utility vehicle crashed into a telephone pole outside the lounge, where Lacy was a guard.
The vehicle’s driver, Patrick Hathetock, was taken to Community Hospital East by a family member, according to the police report on the incident. Two passengers in the vehicle appeared to be injured, and at least one of them, who said he was the vehicle’s owner, was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital, according to the report.
Police found a vehicle near the front porch of the lounge and another with apparent damage down the street from the lounge. It was unclear how the SUV crashed and how Lacy was struck, but Duhamell said investigators were searching for another vehicle that might have been involved in the crash.
There were no details about whether any of the men were arrested in connection with the incident.
He was always trying to just help out and make more money and do anything he could just to support and provide for us,” said Gabrielle Lacy, the victim’s daughter. “We all knew he loved us a lot and would do anything for us he could.”
“I don’t think it’s right what happened,” said Joshua Lacy, the victim’s son. “I think there is a little bit more out there that hasn’t been said yet.”
Indianapolis Metro police are looking for a third vehicle that may have been going the wrong way on Illinois Street or pulled out in front of the SUV, causing the driver to lose control.
The third vehicle was described as a dark, mid-90s box-style vehicle.
“Either a Chevy or Oldsmobile style being driven by a black male with short hair in his 40s,” said IMPD Lt. Jeff Duhamell.
Lacy’s family said they hope someone with information will come forward so they find out exactly what caused their loved one’s death.
“It’s just a whole bunch of bits and pieces and stories aren’t going together,” Gabrielle Lacy said. “I just want everything to come together so I can put it in my head what happened to my father.”
People who were in the SUVs were hurt, but their injuries were not life-threatening.
Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
