Columbia SC Oct 14 2011 A 78-year-old Columbia man died this morning in a single-car incident before dawn, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said today.

Robert Ferguson, of the 6200 block of Hale Street, was the driver and only occupant of his 1990 Honda that veered off the road and struck a power pole, Watts said.

The incident took place at Assembly and Blanding streets.

Ferguson worked as a security guard at the State Farmers Market and had left work at the end of his shift at 5 a.m., Watts said.

Ferguson died at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital at 6 a.m. An autopsy showed he died from blunt force injuries associated with the crash, Watts said.
