Holly Springs MS Oct 18 2012 A Rust College professor, named as a teacher of the year, has been arrested over allegations he raped one of his students.
Sylvester Oliver, 62, is alleged to have carried out the attack in his office at the prestigiousMississippi college.
The student told police she went to speak with Oliver about financial aid when she was assaulted.
Oliver, who was head of the humanities department, resigned from his position after police launched an investigation.
It has since emerged that the professor resigned from a previous school after a 16 year old girl claimed he had sexually assaulted her in his classroom.
Former students at Rust College claimed there had been rumors about Oliver and his involvement with students and questioned why school chiefs did not carry out a background check.
Oliver resigned from Northside High School in 2006 after the student leveled the sex allegations against him.
Police said no charges were ever brought against Oliver who was accused of raping a student in the classroom.
The professor, who is married, was named as humanities teacher of the year in Memphis last year.
He was also associate professor of music at the liberal arts college in Holly Springs, nearMemphis, Tennessee.
Students told WREG TV there has been rumors about Oliver’s behavior since he was hired at the college.
‘They should know who to hire, who not to hire, they should always do a background check,’ said student, Zavier Williams.
‘If you already know about his history, why rehire him?,’ asked student Latrice Burgess.
A spokesman for the college refused to say if a background check was carried out.
The spokesman said:’This is both a personnel matter and an ongoing Police investigation; RustCollege will have no further comments on this matter.’
‘There’s definitely a level of trust there. The alleged victim stated she was in his office to speak with him about financial aid,’ said Holly Springs Police Chief William Hollowell.
According to the college website Dr. Oliver was chair of the Division of Humanities and is an avid researcher on African-American history and music in Mississippi.
He is the author of Hidden Chronicles and numerous articles on African-American history in Marshall County, Mississippi.
Oliver is free on $25,000 bond.

A Bronx high-school dean was arrested Tuesday for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old male student, officials said.
Johnathan Huff, who was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2007, according to the NY Post, was charged with forcible touching, endangering the welfare of a child and sex abuse while classes were being held Saturday at the Urban Assembly Academy for History and Citizenship for Young Men, authorities said.
The dean allegedly fondled the boys privates over his clothes, according to officials, who said they were first alerted to the molestation via a 911 call on Monday.
The school is part of the the Taft High School campus in Mount Eden.
Huff will not be allowed back at the school while investigations continue, but former students said the charges seemed out of character.
“I can’t tell you what a person is capable of doing but I wouldn’t picture him being capable of doing that,” Iris Mendy, a one-time pupil, told NY1.
“Every morning he’d open the doors, humble, saying hi to everybody, he wasn’t that type of guy that would be touching a 14-year-old,” said former student Ivan Echavarria, according to NY1
