Teen Assaults Walmart Security Agent with Baseball Bat www.privateofficer.com
STAUNTON, Va July 18 2012– Police are looking for a 17-year old male who allegedly beat a Walmart security agent with a baseball bat.
The young man was suspected of shoplifting from the store when the incident happened. A loss prevention officer at that Walmart was keeping an eye on the young man, who was at the store with his grandmother.
According to the reports, while the teen was in the sporting goods section, he grabbed a baseball bat and assaulted the officer. The 30-year old officer was hit on his left side, left elbow and right hand. The young man and his family quickly left the store after the attack.
Police say they know who the teen is, but as of right now, he is not in custody. The severity of the officer’s injuries is unknown, but if the injuries are deemed severe, the suspect could face charges of felonious assault.
Staunton Police said they have not seen a shoplifting case like this before.
“It’s just a very usual situation. It’s not one that we confront,” said Public Information Officer with Staunton Police Lisa Klein. “Obviously, we do deal with quite a few shoplifters, not just at Walmart, at stores all over the city. It’s a very serious problem everywhere, but this is unusual.”
Companies like Walmart have their own policies on how to handle these situations. They are trained to deal with shoplifting, but Staunton Police said that in threatening situations, they need to be called.
