Bayou La Batre police arrested a Theodore man Monday in connection with the weekend theft of more than $8,000 worth of copper from a south Mobile County shipyard.
Police said they discovered the copper late Saturday after officers stopped a 1990 Honda Civic traveling on Alabama 188 at about
11:15 p.m. with its back end dragging on the pavement
Two men were in the car.
The weight of the valuable metal was enough to make the car scrape the highway, leaving marks in the road, police said.
“It actually scraped the muffler and tailpipe off,” said police spokesman Cpl. Jason Edwards. “Accord ing to the officers, it took three of them to unload this stuff.”
Police said the copper had been stolen Saturday evening from Master Boat Builders on Alba Avenue in Coden.
Police confiscated the copper and recorded the identities of the driver and his passenger, Edwards said. No arrests were made Saturday because there was no report of a theft, police said.
The owner of the shipyard filed a stolen-property report Monday morning, Edwards said.
One of the men in the car, William Howard Robinson, 29, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree receiving stolen property, according to jail records.
Robinson was being held in Mobile County Metro Jail on Monday afternoon. A hearing to set bail was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Police are still looking for the second man who was in the car, Edwards said. Police declined to disclose his identity.
The copper was valued at $8,210 in total, police said.
