Renaissance Academy fight leads to arrests, injuries www.privateofficer.com
Two students were injured and 17 will be charged after a large fight today at Renaissance Academy, said Lt. Max Hayden of the Virginia Beach Police Department.
The two students who were hurt were treated for facial injuries and were treated at the school by paramedics, Hayden said.
Twelve of the students, all juveniles, will be charged with either assault or disorderly conduct, Hayden said. Their names will not be released because they are juveniles. Five of the students involved are adults who will be charged with disorderly conduct.
No officers or staff members of the school were injured, Hayden said. One school division employee suffered minor injuries and one student will be charged in connection with that injury, Hayden added.
The incident began about 12:35 p.m. with a fight between several students, then escalated when security guards and the school’s resource officer tried to break it up, Hayden said. When the police officer used his radio to call for backup, other officers and supervisors who heard the broadcast went to the scene to help.
The school was locked down from 12:45 to 2 p.m., said Nancy Soscia, school division spokeswoman. Classroom doors were locked as well as doors leading to the outside of the building.
About 12 officers and supervisors went to the school to help break up the fight, Hayden said. Pepper spray was used to help regain control of the situation, Hayden added.
The school is located at 273 N. Witchduck Road. Soscia said that the school will have an increased police presence on Monday in response to the incident.

Police say the officer was approached by a masked man with a gun just before 8:30 p.m. at the TLC Car Wash on Lynnhaven Parkway.
Investigators say the gunman demanded the officer’s belongings. The officer initially complied with the robber, but soon after, a struggle broke out between the two men. The officer got control of the robber’s weapon and fired a shot, but no one was hit.
As the officer was attempting to subdue the suspect, the man’s twin brother arrived, and the officer was forced to fight both men.

The second suspect was arrested at home a short time later.
The twin brothers were identified as Diante Williams and Giovanti Williams, 18, of the 1600 block of Lola Drive. They are charged with armed robbery and felony weapons charges.

www.privateofficer.com Police say that a man who allegedly used a child in a stroller as cover while shoplifting was arrested Wednesday after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a bizarre twist of his crimes.
Virginia Beach police say Ronald Lovelace, 35, alledgedly was responsible for the theft of several thousand of dollars in GPS units and digital frames during multiple shopliftings at the Brookstone store at Lynnhaven Mall earlier this year.

Police acting on a complaint from several people who were threatened at a nightclub have now charged one of the security officers working at the night club where another security guard was shot earlier this week with extortion, abduction and impersonating a police officer.
Early Monday, a security staffer at Club Mystique, in the 1500 block of General Booth Boulevard, was shot after an argument broke out.
According to police, a man said he visited the club with friends on June 23 and was approached by two men working security.
Police say the customer told authorities the two men had badges, guns and radios and identified themselves as off-duty police officers.
The customer said the two men detained him, searched him and threatened him with arrest unless he paid them money, according to police. His iPod, cell phone and digital camera were missing after the search, he told police.
Police say they are still trying to determine whether anyone else was involved.

Three Kroger employee’s stabbed during shoplifting incident http://www.privateofficer.com
Virginia Beach police have charged a juvenile in connection with the stabbing of three employees of a Kempsville supermarket on Thursday.
The employees were stabbed after they tried to detain the 17-year-old suspected of shoplifting at Kroger, police said.
Police could not release his name because he is a juvenile. He was charged with four counts of malicious wounding, one count of petit larceny and one count of possession of marijuana, said Officer Adam Bernstein. He also was served with warrants for failing to appear in court and violating probation.
Wayne Gilbert, a police spokesman, said the incident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. at the Kroger store in the 5200 bock of Providence Road at the Providence Square Shopping Center.
None of those hurt sustained life-threatening wounds, he said. The identities of the victims, all treated at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, were not released.
Gilbert said the events began when store employees spotted a man shoplifting.
Three workers then followed him into the parking lot where they confronted him.
Initially, the man returned with them to the store, Gilbert said.
Once inside and at the front of the market, however, “he began to scuffle with the employees and produced an edged weapon,” Gilbert said, “and began stabbing those employees around him.”
The assailant then fled.
Police arrived moments later and, with information from the victims and witnesses, officers fanned out around the area in hopes of tracking down the assailant.
Just 10 minutes later, Gilbert said, officers spotted a man fitting the description of the attacker in the 5300 block of Glenville Circle, a short distance from and behind the shopping center.
He was taken into custody without further incident, Gilbert said.
Police did not say if a weapon had been recovered.
