Two men exchanged gunshots with security guards today when they tried to hold up a Washington Mutual Bank in Victorville, authorities said.
The suspected robbers, cloaked in hooded sweatshirts, walked into the bank in the 12000 block of Hesperia Road around 12:30 p.m. carrying a handgun and a long gun, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said.
There were 30 patrons and 14 employees inside Washington Mutual.
Security guards confronted the men and a scuffle broke out, during which at least one shot from a suspect’s gun was fired into the ceiling, officials said.
The guards managed to push the suspects outside, and they ran to a waiting maroon hatchback. In their escape, they hit two other vehicles before driving toward Jasmine Street.
The only reported injury was a cut on the guard’s hand, officials said. The roadway between Silica Drive and Comanche Street was shut down while deputies gathered evidence.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Gary Hart at (760) 241-2911 . Anonymous tipsters can call (800) 78-CRIME.
